Robert W. Erdos
August 2, 1930 - March 25, 2017
York
Robert William Erdos, loving husband of Erda Erdos, died peacefully on March 25, 2017. Born in Philadelphia on August 2,1930, he was the son of Clothilde (Tepley) Erdos (d. 1932) and Henry Erdos, who later married Kathryn Todd.
Bob lived in York his entire life, graduating from William Penn Senior High School in 1948. He received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952 and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1955. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. Following his military service, Bob joined his father at Danskin, Inc. where he served as Plant Manager, and retired as Senior Vice-President in 1980.
Bob's lifelong passion for traditional jazz inspired him to found Stomp Off Records in 1980, a recording company dedicated to preserving the styles and repertoire of traditional jazz and ragtime music from the turn of the century through the 1920s. Bob has produced records by bands playing throughout the world and has released over 430 albums. Stomp Off recordings have been used on soundtracks of films and television productions. Bob was considered an authority on classic jazz. He traveled with Erda to jazz festivals in the United States, Europe and Australia.
Bob served as President of the Manufacturers Association and was a member of the Board of Directors of York Hospital, the Jewish Community Center and York Federal Savings and Loan Association. He served as Chairman of the United Way of York County. He was a member of Temple Beth Israel and the York Jewish Community Center.
Bob was an avid tennis player. He was a fan and supporter of the University of Pennsylvania Basketball program and attended most home and away games for many years.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his sister, Norma Bernstein of York; three children, Karen Erdos of Newton, Mass., Gail Erdos of Belmont, Mass. and Michael Erdos and his wife, Diana Anhalt, of Philadelphia; five grandchildren, Charlie Erdos and Jackson Erdos of Philadelphia, Ayla Erdos-Steinberg of Los Angeles, Julian Erdos-Steinberg and Rae Erdos-Steinberg of Belmont, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Temple Beth Israel, 2090 Hollywood Drive, York with Rabbi Jeffrey Astrachan officiating. The family will receive guests at the Temple beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at South Hill Hebrew Cemetery. A reception at the Temple will follow the interment.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Community Center of York, 2000 Hollywood Drive, York, PA 17403, the York County Community Foundation of York, 14 West Market Street, York, PA 17401, and Our Space Inc., 464 Common Street, Box 306, Belmont, MA 02478, founded by Bob's daughter Gail, dedicated to helping improve the lives of children with cancer.

It has been seven years since Bob's passing. Traditional jazz has taken a hit due to Covid and aging of musicians and life performances are not as common any longer compared to years ago. One thing has endured and that is Stomp Off Records. Bob could not have wished for a more enduring and lasting legacy. For that I know the jazz world will always be grateful and it will continue to enjoy the music that has enriched so many lives. Thank you Bob.

Stomp Off (aka. Bob Erdos) has undoubtedly offered many an escape to cope with this dreadful Covid-19 pandemic. From communications with many jazz fans I learned that the mandatory isolation has been difficult for many. Their immersion in traditional jazz, and I refer here in particular to Stomp Off recordings, has made it much easier to cope with what can be defined at "the new abnormal". Bob's legacy has no doubt helped us keep our sanity. I know it did for me and therefore I can once more say: "Thank you Bob", you are very much missed but always around. Pam (Ex Black Eagle Jazz Band and New Jazz Wizards).

It both is and isn't hard to believe that we lost Bob four years ago.
Over the past few months I have been converting my CD collection to MP3 format. Among other things, this effort represents a compressed reminder of what Bob achieved through Stomp Off. Buyers got wonderful music and musicians got an additional source of income. But when you go over several hundred CDs in such a short period, you appreciate that Bob achieved something even more impressive--he build a catalog that documented the best bands and best musicians playing traditional jazz across the world and over nearly 40 years. Bob could be proud of exceeding even his expectations in founding Stomp Off.
And while that is impressive, it pales in comparison to what a wonderful human being he was in so many other ways. I continue to miss his friendship.

It has been three years since Bob's passing and now more than ever, during a period in our lives when fear, chaos and uncertainty dominate due to Covid-19, Bob's legacy of recorded traditional jazz provides comfort and reassurance and an escape to a time when life was normal. Thank you Bob. Erda and family, my thoughts are with you during this difficult day. Nevertheless, I will celebrate this day and play some of my favorite Stomp Off recordings. "Pam"

Dear Erda. I know that you and the family miss Bob very much. So do I and many others. Nobody has filled Bob's shoes promoting traditional jazz the way Bob did. Stomp Off continues to enrich my life when I play the music of the Black Eagles, the New Jazz Wizards and the many great bands that appear on the Stomp Off label. I am convinced that this continues not only of me but many jazz fans and musicians alike. But most of all I miss talking to Bob and having the occasional visits. Pam

Dear Erda,

I am so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. He was a good friend to me and especially to the Red Rose Ragtime Jazz Band -- he recorded us early in our career in the 80's and was instrumental in getting us our first jazz festival gigs.
Without him and Stomp Off, trad jazz would not have sustained its popularity, and I don't believe we would have so many youngsters performing it today such as Tuba Skinny, the Shotgun Jazz Band and others.

My sincere condolences to you,

Mike Schwimmer

Dear Erda and family,
Bob was a remarkable man in every repect. He was a champion on behalf of classic jazz, and there are so many musicians worldwide who were able to express themselves thanks to Bob's Stomp-Off label. Bob and Erda came to Europe many times to visit jazz festivals, and it was a joy to play in front of him, and participate in friendly musical discussions. He was always open to suggestions for Stomp-Off, and had many ideas himself. Unknowingly, he founded a worldwide brotherhood of classic jazz musicians, who perform together to this day.
Thank you Bob for your faith in us.. we will miss you.
Our condolences go out to Erda and the family.
all our love,
Keith & Eve Nichols (UK)

Bob has done so much for traditional jazz. There are few equals that match his interest and output and unselfish approach. I am convinced that his dream to spread traditional jazz worldwide will continue. He will be sorely missed but always remembered. Having been part of the Black Eagles and the leader of the New Jazz Wizards I express my sincere gratitude.
My heartfelt condolences to you Erda.

Sending my condolences...Mr. Erdos had great stories, a passion for the arts and just an all-around nice guy. The world needs more like him!

My deepest condolences to Erda, Bob's children and extended family. Bob was a wonderful person and a treasured friend for over 25 years. I will miss him greatly.
I'd like to think that Louis Armstrong and King Oliver were planning a heavenly recording session of the old Creole Jazz Band, and they told Bob "We can't do it without a great producer. We need you Bob!"

While we didn't see each other often over the years, I always considered Bob to be a great friend with whom I shared a great musical passion. I've always felt I've owed him a great debt of gratitude and am glad that I was able to tell him so while I had the chance. My condolences to Erda, who has always been most cordial to me, and the rest of his family.

Mike and family I am so sorry for your loss. I so loved speaking with your father about the many passions in his life whether it be jazz, politics or Penn basketball. The thing I admired the most about your Dad however was his love and devotion to family. I know this is a tremendous loss for you all, but remember he will always be with you. Please let me know if you need anything. -Eileen
