Dr. Horace B. Faber, Jr., died Friday morning at the Hermitage at Cedarfield. He was 86. Dr. Faber, known to friends and family as "Fabe," was born August 11, 1931 in York, the son of Horace B. Faber, Sr., and Evelyn Rolff Faber, both of whom preceded him in death. He had two sisters, Jean, who preceded him in death, and Anna Weyant, who still resides in York. Fabe excelled academically, graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy and Yale University, and then receiving the Ph.D. from The Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, WI. He spent his working life in the paper industry, moving to Richmond in 1973 to serve as president of Standard Paper Company. In 1978 he founded Falling Creek Recycling, and in 1980 became the principal owner of Halifax Paper Board in Roanoke Rapids, NC, which he operated with great success until he sold the company in 1998, followed by his retirement in 1999.
Dr. Faber was a man of solid and abiding Christian faith. For many years he and Sundra were members of Stratford Hills United Methodist Church before joining Bon Air Baptist Church in 2006. He enjoyed attending Sunday School there and was a faithful reader of scripture.
Nothing was as important to Fabe as family. He was married for 62 years to Sundra Ness Faber, also from York, who survives him. Together they raised three wonderful daughters, Beth (Frank Saunders), of Mechanicsville; Christine (Joel Shuman) of Kingston, PA, and Aileen, of Richmond. He had eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His entire family mourns his loss and will miss him tremendously. Family will receive visitors Sunday, August 20, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Bon Air Baptist Church, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. officiated by the Reverend Jessie Larkins. Interment will be private in the church columbarium. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
