William H. Stiles

William H. "Bill" Stiles, 77, died on Monday, February 19, 2018 at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Patricia J. (Skelding) Stiles.
Bill was born in York on January 26, 1941, son of the late Wilmer and Harriet (Hively) Stiles.
Bill had over 40 years experience with mechanics and race car technology. Following graduation from York High School in 1958, Bill attended Williamsport Technical Institute for automotive. He worked at Ammon R. Smith Auto Co. as a Service Manager. Bill built transmissions and rear ends for the "Old Reliable". In 1965, he built the altered wheelbase that won the first NHRA national event for altered wheelbase cars at Bristol, TN. Bill owned and operated Stiles Performance, specializing in race car engines and race cars. In 1990 he began specializing in race car magnetos and has been supplying to many top race teams nationwide with his product. His own racing accomplishments were numerous national records with is '68 Barracuda. He won the NHRA All-Star Super Stock Circuit Championship in 1969 and was class will at numerous NHRA National Events.
Bill was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, York County Racing Club, York County Shrine Club, York Forest 30 Tall Cedars, Zeredatha Lodge 451 F. & A.M., Harrisburg Consistory and a life member of the York County Agricultural Society.
Bill is survived by four children, Robert Stiles and his wife, Kelly of Windsor, William Stiles II and his wife, Tina of Seven Valleys, Susan Weaver and her husband, Bob of York and Richard Stiles and his wife, Della of York; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 23, 2018 at the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York, with the Rev. Keith Fair officiating. A viewing will be held on Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mount Rose Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of York County, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA 17406 or to York County Racing Club, 4255 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA 17404 or to the American Cancer Society, 924-N, York, PA 17403.

Bill was more than a friend , he was a man of great historical stature in the drag racing world that I greatly admired! The stories and events he had shared with me will be forever treasured and documented. These memories will be embraced til my last breath.

I have known Bill since 1966. We established a friendship while he was working on one of my cars. What a great guy and someone I believe did not get the recognition he deserved in the racing world. Prayers to Bobby and the other family members.
