John Crean Obituary

John Crean, the multi-millionaire Orange County businessman known as much for his extraordinary philanthropy and his rags-to-riches story as he was for the signature Fleetwood recreational vehicles and mobile homes he designed and manufactured, died Thursday.

Crean, who was 81, had been ill with heart disease and died quietly at his Santa Ana Heights home, better known as the Village Crean, about 1 p.m.

He built his fortune on the belief that success comes when you put customers and employees first. He and his wife, Donna, traveled around the country asking RV owners what they liked – and disliked - about their roving homes. He then incorporated their wishes and ideas into his new models.

At the same time, he was among the first to offer profit-sharing programs, reasoning that if workers had an interest in the company, they would strive to ensure its success.

When he founded Fleetwood Enterprises in Riverside in 1951, he vowed to stay out of debt and keep his overhead as low as he could.

He stayed true to those goals and by 1998, the year Crean retired, Fleetwood, a $3 billion-a-year Fortune 500 company, was operating 18 recreational vehicle and 38 manufactured housing plants in 17 states and Canada. That year the company sold 69,494 RVs, 65,544 manufactured homes and employed 19,000 workers.

While he built his business on a foundation of fairness, customer satisfaction and sound financial management, he and Donna built their lives around the words of a Lutheran minister who urged his congregation to tithe 10 percent, saying that if you give without expecting anything in return, you'll get a tenfold return in blessings on your investment.

Crean said he thought those were "damn good odds."

From then on, he and Donna started giving away part of whatever they made, starting with 10 percent and eventually donating half of their annual earnings to charity. Many of their donations were made anonymously and Crean deftly sidestepped queries about how much money they gave away.

Among the beneficiaries of their generosity were Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, the Orange County Philharmonic Society, Opera Pacific, the YWCA Hotel for Women, the Crystal Cathedral, the Santa Ana Zoo, the Balboa Theater, the Children's Bureau of Southern California, and the Orange County Republican Party.

One of the couple's most valuable donations was the use of their 18,000-square-foot mansion for fund-raising events.

Crean was born in 1925 in Bowdon, N.D., on the Fourth of July, which, he says in his self-published autobiography, "The Wheel and I," "can give you a pretty warped idea of your own importance when you're a kid."

He was 4 when his family moved west and settled in Compton.

His father was in poor health and the family barely scraped by financially. Crean started early keeping his eye out for ways to make a few dollars.

After serving in both the Navy and Merchant Marine during World War II, he lived with his mother in Compton and went to college briefly.

But he dropped out after reading an essay in which publisher William Allen White said he'd done a lot better by being out in the working world.

So, Crean followed his brother Leonard, known as "Speed," into the trailer business.

Good with his hands and full of ideas for what would make a marketable trailer, Crean kept coming up with better ways to do things.

After working for a Venetian blind salesman, Crean designed blinds for use in trailers and started Coach Specialites Manufacturing Co., with his wife, Donna, stringing the blinds by hand.

Six months later, in 1951, he founded Fleetwood Enterprises. He sketched the familiar kangaroo found on the back of his popular Fleetwood RV, the Bounder, himself on a napkin at Denny's, one of his favorite breakfast spots.

The Fleetwood brand brought with it quality construction, a quiet, smooth ride and lots of new, state-of-the-art features for the time, such as sub-floor water tanks that wouldn't freeze in cold weather and a storage basement so owners didn't have strap their luggage to the roof.

Crean was a man with big ideas, a bigger heart, a great sense of humor and a zest and appreciation for life. He raced sports cars and dune buggies, collected cars and built and flew model airplanes.

He also entertained lavishly at his four-acre estate and aboard his $7 million 125-foot luxury yacht, the Donna C.

He had to buy a second home on Lido Isle largely for the oversized boat slip.

"Well," he explained somewhat sheepishly. "You have to park (the boat) somewhere."

Crean loved to cook, although the results were dubious, according to his longtime friend Barbara Venezia. Still, he and Venezia co-hosted, from 1992 to 1998, a popular cable-TV cooking show, "At Home on the Range," filmed in his 5,000-square-foot garage on a set he made himself.

The show was as much comedic banter and culinary mishaps, from fires to dropped omelettes, as it was recipes. And most of his concoctions came from a Bisquick or other convenience-food box or can.

Together they published a cookbook, "At Home on the Range – The Cookbook for the Deranged."

One of the most popular recipes was for Crean's home-made dog food, containing potatoes, carrots, eggs, navy beans and "just enough hamburger to interest the dog," then baked in a loaf.

After selling his stake in Fleetwood and retiring in 1998, he built a 130-home tract, Crean Acres, in Hemet, with affordable houses designed for people 55 and older, with wheelchair-accessible doorways and, of course, an RV parking space.

John Crean ended his career as he began it – thinking of his customers first.

Dear Mrs. Crean and Family; There are no words to express my heartfelt sympathy to you and the family. My husband Tom and I lived in Yorba Linda and just loved watchiing the cooking show Home on the Range. We laughed so hard. We both felt we knew John with his jovial laughter . We never got to buy that Fleetwood Motor home as my Tom passed away from Lou Gehrigs disease . But I will always remember our looking at them at the RV centers. John had it all down to a science that is for sure and I know that he went right to heaven. He will be missed by many and loved by many just as we loved him and all of his family for there generosity to mankind.
God Bless all of you during this difficult time.

Dear Crean Family,
Although I did not get to know Johnny, I feel like he was a part of our family. You see, my grandfather was Dale Skinner, and he would tell us about Johnny, Fleetwood and their many adventures. He would beam when describing the experiences he had with Johnny! I can only imagine that Mr. Crean had that impact on all those who knew him! I feel like we have lost a dear member of our family! I am so sorry for your loss! You are in my thoughts and prayers!

The headline on RV Business reads "John Crean: A True RV Industry Pioneer", they forgot to include Hero, Mentor and Visionary. I became a Fleetwood RV dealer in 1969 and just in time to benefit from so many of John's ideas and creations. John was the fuse that ignited people like Dave Russel to try new concepts and design new products that were priced right and met the needs of the buyers. John's standards drove Fleetwood and it's people like Elden Smith to be a great company to deal with and for us to build a business around. Every now and again we have an opportunity here on earth to learn from people that aren't afraid to break new ground and try to improve life here from a different set of plans and show the rest of us that we need to take a few more risks and be a little more benevolent if we want to be able to grab a piece of the brass ring for ourselves and I think that is what John taught to do us in his own unique way!

My deepest smypathies to Andy and Johnnie and all the Crean family at this painful time. John Crean was a man that was often mentioned in my family as he was my father's first cousin. Many times my father told me the story of how John's father had emigrated to the U.S. and started his business. Now I'm sure they are there together in heaven meeting for the first time, touching ground with roots and I can see Paddy, my father, telling him about Mallow, Cork...my thoughts are with you all.
Heartfelt smypathies.

It was more than fifty years ago that I first met John Crean. My father had been manufacturing Aljo travel trailers since 1945. In the late 50's he asked his friend, John, for his opinion and advice about expanding into other states and building RV's. Generous as always, John offered his ideas and expertise, and recommended that he do it. My father took his advice, and thus was born the company that became Winnebago.

To the Crean Family:
What a life – what an example. I thank God that John was here and that through the choices he made on a daily basis, he became a living example of a higher life – a higher standard. I will remember him for his down-to-earth attitude, his generosity and that his identity was never in what he had, but who he was inside. He is an example for all who wish to attain success – for it is never about what you have in your store house, but rather, how you use it. No doubt, this man will proudly be received by our Father.

To Johns family, all of them. I've known John for over 23 years. Meeting him and Chico the first time at his ranch just east of Reno at a mens campout there. I always remember him telling me to tuck my shirt in, I looked like a bum when I was newly sober. To when I went to work for his friend Stan at the trash company, his recomedation was employees are like light bulbs, if he doesn't work out unscrew him and screw in another one. I worked there for over a dozen years. Again with only Johns kind of humor, when I was very sick after having an operation for cancer, he and BV told the ICU nurses that he was my father and BV was my stepmother so he could come in and visit me. I will truly miss this wonderful man who helped me so much when I was trying to get sober 23 years ago.

Dear Crean family,

Very sad to hear the passing of Mr. Crean.

i had watched his show "Cooking on the Range" many times, knowing always it would put a smile on my face with the antics of he and his co-partner.

i never met him, but knew he and his wife Donna were "V.I.P's" in the area of philanthropy. After reading the wonderful article about him in the Register, i found out just how wonderful this man and his wife were to the people of Orange County (and many outside areas, too).

Orange Co has lost a formidable leader, a man who was caring, giving and had a down-to-earth sensibility about him.

Even us, the ones who had never the chance to meet him will miss him greatly. We should all live our lives as he did, with humor and grace. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Mrs. Crean and the family.

Sincerely,

Carol Rice

I didn't know of John's connection with Fleetwood RV until I saw the news on OC Register. I knew John from his cable show "At Home on the Range", which I enjoyed tremandously when it aired. I guess that is a testimony on how a down-to-earth guy John was. To me he was just a guy next door who loved to cook and have fun. From the article I read about John's accomplishment and philantropic work, and the loss is much greater than what I have realized. John will truly be missed.

Brian Weide

January 13, 2007

My father, Wiliam "Bill" Weide, started working with Johnny Crean in 1958 as an accountant and together, along with insightful and strong leadership including Dale Skinner, Dan Stretch, and others, helped build Fleetwood and its subsdiaries into the mega-company it eventually became. Johnny was always totally non-pretentious to everyone he met. I remember fondly the 4th of July celebrations the Crean's used to have at their Capristrano estate celebrating both Independence Day and Johnny's birthday. Fleetwood employees and their families were always invited, and Johnny assigned me the task of picking up new arrivals from the lower parking area and bringing them to the house in his VW bus. (I was 16 then- I'm 53 now.) It was a great time and one of the fondest memories I have from that era. When my father passed in December, 2002, Johnny was actually in the hospital and could not attend the funeral, but his wife, Donna, was gracious enough to call me at home to express her condolences. Our family, and many others, will miss you, Johnny.

I still to this day have the most wonderful friends and family because of Fleetwood. He strived for honesty, integrity and customer loyalty. Which I have carried on in all my future endeavors. It was a real pleasure to have had the opportunity to work and know the Man behind such a wonderful place. The respect given and received can not be matched. Thank you for blessing my family with what I call today "My Fleetwood Family." To the Crean Family, his legacy will always follow you.
Be Proud, honored and filled with the memories of the joyeous times together as we all celebrate his life and a life well lived.

John, will be missed by those who knew him and the many that knew of him. He was a rock with his beleifs and was a man who could laugh at himself. He created a legacy in the busness world. He made life eaiser and affordable for thousands of families world wide. John made you feel special and gave you hope and faith for being succesful. I was one of the lucky ones to know him all my life. He helped my father with the demons of alcoholism by becoming his AA sponsor 50 years ago. They became life long friends. Many stories and many cherished adventures. John Crean had a huge impact on my life over the years. With a phone call he would take time out of his schedual to see me for a talk and advise that I needed. He made you feel if there's a will there's a way and the biggest obsticle is usally yourself. When my father got very Ill John was there every week to visit his fading buddy with himself also in pain. I was one of the lucky ones to sit with them as he helped make Dads last days enjoyable with laughter and stories about adventures they had and Im sure of some we will never know about. "The three amigos are together agian" (That's another story) We were all the lucky ones to have known him.

I never had the pleasure of meeting John Crean, but I do have the pleasure of working at Rancho Capistrano, the South Campus of the Crystal Cathedral Ministries, where John and Donna lived prior to donating the property to the Crystal Cathedral. The land is amazing, at the 5 freeway and Avery in San Juan Capistrano. Most recognizable at Christmastime when the giant Nativity is erected on the hillside each year. John was truly a blessing.

Thank you for all you did to make OC a better place. After our marriage my wife and I always loved to watch your show when she would get home from work late when we lived in Tustin. Be at peace, and may your family always remember what a special person you were!

Our deepest sympathy and prayers to Mrs Crean and the Crean family. I used to watch At Home on the Range and think who are these two characters; while laughing throughout the entire show. I still enjoy the re-runs. God Bless.

John was an amazing philanthropist, and used his energy, connections, and money to make positive changes happen in the lives of so many people. Thank you, and God bless you.

My deepest condolences to Donna and the family.

I loved the show, John was funny as hell and a pretty good cook, I was saddened to hear the news but know he is home in the range up in the sky.

We lived in Orange County before moving to Tucson,AZ. I enjoyed watching the cooking show and even stayed up very late when it was put way into the wee hours of the night.
My wife and I attended a taping of one of the shows. Last week, we were both in our dentist's office and I picked up a copy of an RV magazine. In it was a story about John with pictures of when he was a young boy with his dad and brother. The story prompted my wife and I to remember the good time we had "in the garage" the night we went to the cooking show.
God Bless your family at this sad time.
