Kenneth Sullivan Obituary

Sullivan, Kenneth C., beloved husband, father, brother and wonderful friend, passed away July 14th, 2008 after a brief illness. Ken was born April 24, 1924 in Brea, CA to Arthur and Ruth Sullivan. He attended Fullerton Union High School where he met his future wife, Joyce Irene MacClocklin, at a Spanish Club holiday dinner. He had a lifelong passion for the game of baseball and was captain of the FUHS team that won the CIF championship in 1942. Ken served in World War II in the European theater, where he was part of the D-Day invasion, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and marched in the parade when France was liberated. When he returned from the war, Ken and Joyce married on November 16, 1946. He entered the construction field and later went into sales. After retirement, Joyce and Ken enjoyed golf, entertaining and traveling with many friends over the years. Ken cherished his Buick Park Avenue, raising tomatoes in his garden, listening to ball games and spending time with his children and grandchildren at their family birthday parties. Ken is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Nancy Boyd (husband Jim) and Pete Sullivan (wife Nancy Lynn); grandchildren, Dan Sullivan, Kelley Sullivan and Jesse Boyd; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Ryan, Ciera and Eryn, and sisters, Kathleen Gordon and Marian Sullivan. A memorial service to celebrate Ken's life will be held on Saturday, August 9th at 1:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church of Fullerton.

It's interesting sometimes how life works. I met Ken about six years ago when I was organizing the FUHS Baseball Alumni Reunion and Game. We talked extensively about the 1942 baseball team and what a great and yet tragic story it was. I requested the school to at least put a banner up along with the other CIF Champion banners but I got nowhere. Unfortunately, I got involved with other things and didn't follow through with Ken's request to get the team recognized. I thank God that the gentleman got the recognition for the team that they so rightly deserved. Because the way I understand it, if our brave Fullerton boys didn't go off to fight for our freedom that Summer they would have played Long Beach and no doubt beat them.

So, I started this new community newspaper in Fullerton and I never forgot the story about Ken and the team and I wanted to go back and interview him a few weeks ago to refresh my memories and relay the story for my paper. Then I ran across the obituary.

I know Ken is up there with all the great FUHS ballplayers right now like Trent, Vaughan, Walter, Willard, Arky and the rest of the guys and I wouldn't want to be on the opposing side of that team.

Ken was a great man, a gentleman and my hero. My condolences to his family.

Ditto -- many thanks to Tom Gregory for getting the team recognized for their win. It brought Dad a lot of pleasure to receive that recognition, thanks Tom!

I have placed Ken's obituary on the Fullerton Union High School All-Alumni blog so that any friends who missed it in the Register may still read it. Ken will be missed by all of his former classmates at future annual FUHS All-Alumni luncheons.

Thanks to Tom Gregory for making it possible for Kenny and his teammates to finally receive their 1942 CIF Baseball Championship recognition...a great tribute to a wonderful man and a war hero. You can read all about that great Fullerton High School Baseball team at www.cifss.org under "History Corner."
