Allen Mundal Obituary
MUNDAL, ALLEN LAURITZ, MD 1916 - 2006. Allen Lauritz Mundal was born Sept 11, 1916 in Franklin, Minn to Severt and Ida Mundal, both first generation Norwegian-Americans. He grew up in Wilbur, a small wheat town in eastern Washington where he was known as Bado, a well-rounded athlete, talented musician, and high-achieving student. Al's college years were spent at WSU where he graduated with a degree in pharmacy. He was employed as a pharmacist for one year prior to entering University of Oregon Medical School, graduating in 1943. Following his internship, he was called up for service in World War II. He was stationed at Wright Air Field in Dayton, Ohio and assigned as head of the civilian dispensary. It was there that he married Jeanne McIrvin, an RN he knew from Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland. They were married on Jan 20, 1945. Upon returning to Portland, Al took his residency at Veterans Hospital and began his private practice in internal medicine, including caring for employees of the Southern Pacific and Northern Pacific terminals as well as Bonneville Power. He was on staff at Good Samaritan Hospital for 40 years. In 1961 Al and Jeanne, along with John and Helen Reynolds, purchased acreage from a plant nursery and began the planning and building of Crestview Convalescent Hospital. It opened in 1964 and, under their guidance, served the community for 20 years with its high quality patient care. Al retired from his practice in 1986. A long-time member of Portland Golf Club, he could then be found on the course any day of the week, rain or shine. In his retirement years, he was proud of the fact he made a total of six holes-in-one: three playing left-handed and three playing right-handed. A keen competitor and sportsman, Al also enjoyed tennis, bowling, and bridge. Al passed away Jan 11, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; his daughter, Gayle Love; and sons, Tom and Alan, all of Portland; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, Jan 22, 2006 at the Old Church, 1422 SW 11th Ave, Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Legacy Hospice, PO Box 4484, Portland, OR 97208.
