Gaston D'Haillecourt Obituary

Gaston G. D'Haillecourt, 87, of St. Louis, passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at the Gratiot Medical Center in Alma.

Gaston was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Mulberry, Kan., to Louis and Rebecca D'Haillecourt. He married Georgeen Lanshaw on Oct. 17, 1944, in Cleveland, Ohio. Gaston started in his youth as a community organizer and conscientious objector, which consisted of serving a year at Milan doing community services and also two years at a Cleveland Hospital. He graduated from Central Michigan University with his masters degree. He started his career with Consumers Power Co. as a field engineer and draftsman. In the 1960's he went into teaching and taught in Blanchard and Ithaca. He then was a professor of industrial arts at Central Michigan University, retiring in 1985. Gaston served as a board member and site supervisor for Habitat for Humanity for many years. He was an active supporter of the Chippewa Nature Center of Midland, and carpenter for the Gratiot County Players.

He is survived by his wife, Georgeen; three children, Gareth D'Haillecourt of Clare, Gavrik (Kathy) D'Haillecourt of Clare, and Gia D'Haillecourt of St. Louis; sister, Gilbertha Russell of Royal Oak; brother, Gabriel (Sallie) D'Haillecourt of Warren; sister-in-law, Shirly Holub of Clare; seven grandchildren, Katie Green, Tahlia, Colleen, Hannah, Gabriel, Kristen D'Haillecourt and Sheri Schmidt; three great-grandchildren, Pammi Schmidt, Kathlyn Allmacher and Owen Matthew Green; nephews, Michael and Danial Russell and Mike and Dick Leonard; niece; Helen Wright; and good friends, Jerry and Mary Straub and Hal Crawley. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, 11 a.m. from the Berry Funeral Home in Shepherd with interment in Salt River Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. with family resent from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Habitat for Humanity.

We are saddened to learn of Gaston's passing. He was a very creative and forthright gentleman--I enjoyed him as a fellow faculty member and mentor. Our thoughts are with him and his family.
