Annie Harrison Obituary

Annie D. Harrison CHESAPEAKE - Annie P. Harrison, 80, passed away peacefully in Chesapeake Aug. 14, 2008, while residing at Dominion Village. She was the devoted wife and partner of E. Trigg Harrison, former postmaster of Chesapeake, from 1948 until his death in 1985. Annie, also known as Anne, was born in Wake County, North Carolina, the daughter of Milton Simon Dean and Mary Octonia Winborn Dean. She was a proud graduate of Churchland High School Class of 1944. Anne retired from the Portsmouth branch of the DMV. She also worked from 1962 to 1974 for the City of Chesapeake Police as a school crossing guard at GA Treakle Elementary School. She really took pride in getting her children to and from school safely. Anne worked as a volunteer on many projects and clubs through the years. She loved the Deep Creek Community in which she lived from 1952. She was a member of the Deep Creek United Methodist Church, DAV Auxiliary, and served on the Boards of the Deep Creek Lions Club, Chesapeake General Hospital Auxiliary, and the Women's Division of the Chesapeake Chamber of Commerce. Anne was an Associate Member of the National Association of Postmaster's of the United States (NAPUS) as the widow of Trigg. She is survived by three daughters, Anna Kent of Chesapeake, Patricia Lowe Thompson and husband Mark of Collosse, Va., and Mary Harrison-Jones with Steve Lassiter of Gloucester Point, Va. She is also survived by her grandchildren Wayne Kent and wife Carol of Roanoke, Va., Jonathan Kent of Virginia Beach, Allison Phelps and husband Billy of Chesapeake, Chris Lowe and wife Connie of Newport News and James Thompson and wife Renee of Nags Head, N.C. She enjoyed her four great-grandchildren, Kiri and Bradley Phelps, Chloe Kent, Austin Thompson; and her granddog, Sugar Girl. She also knew of and anticipated the birth of the Lowe twins. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Frank and George Dean; and sister Ruby Bates. She is survived by a sister, Kay Clawson of Ammon, Idaho. She will be missed by her large family and friends. A celebration of her life will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Deep Creek United Methodist Church, 141 N. George Washington Highway, Chesapeake. The family invites you to come and share in this time of reflection. A reception will follow. Anne loved the flowers she had in her yard, but always said "give me flowers while I'm living, not when I'm dead." With that in mind, the family requests you make a donation to charity of your choosing. Anne was a strong supporter of a scholarship fund that was established in memory of her late husband. If you would like to send a donation in her memory, please send it to the following: Trigg Harrison Scholarship Fund, c/o Mary Harrison-Jones, Virginia Chapter of NAPUS, P.O. Box 306, Gloucester Point VA 23062-0306. The family would like to thank the staff at Dominion Village for the loving care they gave her these last few years. We would also like to thank the team from Heartland Hospice for their care and attention these last days. Anne loved life and loved all who shared in it.

Mary and Family, I am so sorry to hear about your Mom. I have been on vacation and just returned. She was such a wonderful person and taught you how to live and love. Just remember she is more alive now than she has ever been. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Anna, Tissie and Mary Lynn,
I have such fond memories of growing up on Wesley Road and of course your family was always a part of that. As a small child, your Mother was always so sweet and kind to all of us on Wesley Rd. I was always afraid of your Dad's guns(I thought he was the police when he worked at DMV)! And I'll never forget announcing to my end of the street that Mrs. Harrison was getting a new "baby". That would be Mary Lynn. Doesn't seem possible that life could pass so swiftly. As an adult I could always count on seeing your Mom's smiling face whenever I passed her house. We have missed your Mom at church these past few years. I will always treasure knowing your family and our childhood memories.
Sincerely, Susie Old Archer

Dear Anna, Patricia and Mary,
It has been years since I have had the pleasure of seeing your mother (or any of you), but I will always have very fond memories of the incredible hospitality that Anne and Trigg showed to our family when we visited you during our summer vacations in my youth. Your mother was always so warm and friendly to us, and had to have incredible patience to put up with a pretty raucus group of children, including us Tennessee hillbillies, wrecking her house. I know that Anne had health struggles in recent years, and that you struggled along with her, but have been pleased to learn of the care and support you all gave to her. She, and you, will be in our prayers.
With deepest condolences,
Tom Cox and Family

Dear Anna, Patricia and Mary:
Knowing your mom is one of the fondest memories I will carry with me and I will miss her. Growing up with Harrisons' and Nelms' was certainly an adventure for us. Uncle Trigg and Aunt Annie were there for us Nelms kids even before we knew them. When Capt Frank went to get Joan, he had to get permission and get past your mom and dad to marry her. They obviously felt that the match was a good one because here we all are! Aunt Annie was quick to share gardening tips and whether it was flowers or vegetables, she knew her stuff. I like to remember her in the yard, always cutting grass or pulling weeds and tending to her beautiful flowers. She always smiled when we came by and fussed over us like we were her own kids, or was that fussed at us!! We were a herd of energetic kids back then. I am sending you my deepest sympathy and warmest condolences. I believe the memory of Aunt Annie will stay near and comfort us all forever. Much Love: Lois
