Nellie Carr White NORFOLK - Nellie Carr White, 86, a longtime resident of Norfolk, passed away peacefully Aug. 17, 2008, while residing at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She was the devoted wife and partner of Denva L. White Jr. from 1943 until his death in 1995. Nellie, also known as Nell, was born in Isle of White County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Lennie J. Carr and Lillie Mae Carr. She was predeceased by sister, Lucille C. Daughtrey and brother, Lennie J. Carr Jr. Nell was a devoted member of Talbot Park Baptist Church, serving faithfully for many years on its flower committee preparing beautiful arrangements for church services and also as a Sunday school teacher. She was an avid bridge player for more than 40 years with membership in the American Contract Bridge League as a Life Master. She was a member of the Elizabeth River Women's Club, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the Norfolk Garden Club. Her joys were family, friends, dancing, playing cards, gardening, golfing, the beach and traveling but especially spending time with her husband. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Nelda E. White, Glenda E. White and her husband Lynn Underwood; three sons, Denva L. White III and his wife Barbara, Donald L. White and his wife Suellen and David C. White and his wife Catherine; grandchildren, Layton White, Harrison White, Chad Cardoza, Christie Cardoza, Elizabeth Pittman, Travis Pittman, Scott White, Madison White, Georgia White, Blair White; four great-grandchildren, Bennett, Campbell, Hayley and Graham; three sisters, Emma C. Griggs and husband Joseph of Suffolk, Sara C. Carter and husband Thomas of Franklin, Myrtle C. Ingvaldson and husband Oswald of Virginia Beach; sister-in-law, Rena G. Carr of Suffolk; and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her large family and friends. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Our Lady of Perpetual Help for their loving care of Mom. The family will receive friends today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Talbot Park Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Keith Martin. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk.
