Scott Starr Obituary


Scott Alan Starr VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Fire Controlman (SW/AW) Scott Alan Starr, 47, passed away Aug. 18, 2008, in his home. Master Chief Starr is a native of Hillsdale, Mich. Upon graduation from Hillsdale High School in 1979 and a two-year stint exploring the civilian job market, he entered the U.S. Navy in August 1981 under the Advanced Electronics Field (AEF) program. Upon graduation from Data Systems Technician "A" School and DD/LHA Display Maintenance "C" School, he reported to his first duty station, USS Leftwich (DD 984), where he served as an NTDS Display Technician, advanced to DS2 and earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Pin. His next assignment was to Combat Systems Technical Schools Command, Marc Island, Calif., where he was selected as his department's Sailor of the Year, advanced to DS1 (SW), earned his Master Training Specialist designation, and completed three associate's degrees plus a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology. Upon graduation from SNAP I Maintenance Technician "C" School, he reported aboard USS Sylvania (AFS 2) where he earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Pin, advanced to DSC (SW/AW), and served as Automated Data Processing Division Officer. His follow-on sea tour was to USS Saipan (LHA 2) where he served as Combat Systems Data Division Officer. After four years at sea, Chief Starr reported to Fleet Combat Center Atlantic (FCTCLANT) where he served as the Joint Maritime Command and Control System-Maritime Senior Instructor. While at FCTCLANT, he advanced to DSCS (SW/AW) and completed a master's degree in Human Resource Management. Senior Chief Starr then reported to the pre-commissioning crew of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) where he served as Combat Systems Department Leading Chief Petty Officer upon his advancement to FCCM (SW/AW) and graduation from the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy with honors. Choosing back-to-back sea tours, Master Chief Starr then reported to the pre-commissioning crew of USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) where he served as Systems Test Officer for the first SSDS MK II Mod I configured CVN. In May 2004, Master Chief Starr reported to NAVSEA Combat Direction Systems Activity for duties as SSDS Fleet Liaison and Senior Enlisted Advisor. Master Chief Starr is survived by his wife, Christine L. Starr; his mother, Betty Page of Alaska; his father, Alvin "Bob" Starr and his stepmother Alexandra Snyder of Anaheim, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Shannon Renee Hilburn and Jessica Michele Karr; stepson, Michael Paul Karr, all of Virginia Beach; sister, Sue Burns of Michigan; brother, Kevin Starr of California; two grandchildren, Kayla Lilly Roberts of Virginia Beach and Garrett Michael Rogers of Oregon; two nieces and a nephew. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. in The Chapel by the Sea at the Dam Neck Annex. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
