Rev. Michael Chester Murray

Michael C. Murray CHESAPEAKE - The Rev. Michael Chester Murray of the 3500 block of Joyce Court passed away Aug. 23, 2008. Michael, the adoptive son of the late Chester and Ruth Murray, died at the home of his foster sister, Anita Cuffee. Michael attended the public schools of Arlington County, Virginia, and graduated from the Hoffman-Boston High School. He attended Hampton University and Howard University and earned a Master of Divinity degree in the School of Theology, Virginia Union University, Richmon. Michael was licensed to preach in December 1978 at Mount Olive Baptist Church, Arlington, Va., where he was a member for more than 30 years. He was currently a member and associate minister of the Historic First Baptist Church, Bute St., Norfolk, where he also served as young adult church school class teacher, Bible academy instructor, associate minister of worship and computer ministry. The Rev. Murray served in the U.S. Army and served as the executive secretary in the marketing department of Norfolk Southern Corp. for 30 years. His memory will be cherished and missed by his foster family, Anita Cuffee, Carole Ricks and Mary Tilghman, Gennieve Mennefield of Falls Church, Va., and a host of other church family and friends. A memorial wake will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church, 418 E. Bute St., Norfolk. A graveside burial will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. A viewing will be held Thursday in Metropolitan Funeral Service, Berkley Ave. Chapel. Condolences may be offered at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.
