Leslie Hollowell Obituary


L. Jake Hollowell TYNER - Leslie Jake Hollowell, 84, of the 600 block of Center Hill Road, died Sept. 2, 2008, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton. Mr. Hollowell was born in Gates County and was the son of the late William Guy and Mattie Lou Ward Hollowell. A retired manager from Colonial Stores, based in Norfolk, he was a member and deacon of Center Hill Baptist Church, its adult choir, the Senior Adult Sunday school class, the Men's Brotherhood, and the Chowan Ruritan Club. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a sergeant and served in the military police. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Marie Bunch Hollowell; sisters, Helen Underwood, Virginia Rountree and Mildred Hurdle; and brothers, Horace and Wayland Hollowell. Surviving are his wife, Alene Dale Briggs Hollowell; daughter, Patricia Hensley and husband Gerald of Williamsburg; and sons, Dr. William Thomas Hollowell and wife Vickie of Apex, N.C., and Roy Hollowell and wife Wanda of Williamsburg. Also surviving are Alene's sons, R. Wayne Briggs and wife Ingrid of Boca Raton, Fla., and Allen Dale Briggs and wife Valerie of Newport News; 13 grandchildren, Teresa Costello and husband Bradley, Michael Hensley and wife Erica, Matthew Hollowell and wife Lindsay, Ashley Hunsberger and husband Scott, Leslie, Kindall, and Adam Hollowell, Catherine, John, Andrew, Zachary, Zoe, and Zane Briggs; and four great-grandchildren, Caiti, Cayla and Caryn Costello and Julian Hensley. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Center Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Reagan Marsh. Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Rosewood Memorial Park, Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. Friends may join the family Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the building fund of Center Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 159, Tyner, NC 27980.
