Carl Fortner Obituary


Carl William Fortner NORFOLK - Carl William Fortner, 79, passed away Sept. 3, 2008, in Sentara Leigh Hospital. A native of Salisbury, N.C., he was the son of the late Ruby Caroline and Roy W. Fortner. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant where he served in the Korean War as a fighter pilot. He also retired from the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority as the director of housing. He was a member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church. He is survived by his son and the apple of his eye, Larry William Fortner and his wife Melissa Renee Fortner of Norfolk; three sisters, Viola Fortner Hudgins of Salisbury, N.C., Geraldine Poole of Woodleaf, N.C. and April Whitaker of Lexington, N.C.; and four brothers, Charles Fortner, Richard Fortner, Bobby Gene Fortner, all of Salisbury, and Billy Ray Fortner of Little Rock, Ky. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Ashley Marie Fortner of Virginia Beach and his beloved dog, Sassy. A funeral will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Virginia Heights Baptist Church, 1251 Kempsville Road, Norfolk, with retired U.S. Navy Capt. Gerald Vintinner, Chaplain Corps, officiating. The burial with military honors will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Virginia Heights Baptist Church.
