Nellie Snowden Obituary


Nellie Cates Snowden CHESAPEAKE - Nellie Cates Snowden, 88, a native of Portsmouth and resident of Chesapeake, peacefully passed away Sept. 14, 2008, surrounded by family at the Maryview Nursing Care Center. She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Mrs. Snowden was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a retired employee of the City of Portsmouth. Mrs. Snowden was predeceased by her husband, Robert M. Snowden; her sister, Grace Creasy; and brothers, August Cates, Jerry Cates and Howard James. She was the daughter of the late James Clarence and Mary Elizabeth Cates. She is survived by her children, Ruth Virginia Emmons and her husband Nelson, Robert J. Snowden Sr. and his wife Glenda, and Katherine Snowden Rivenbark and her husband Terry. Mrs. Snowden was extremely proud of her eight grandchildren, Linda Nell Emmons Cooper and her husband Tracy, Nelson Emmons Jr. and his wife Namkang, Maryanne Emmons Conrod and her husband Johan, Nicole Emmons, Robert J. Snowden Jr., Roth M. Snowden, Elizabeth Rivenbark Beaman and her husband Rob, and Andrew Rivenbark. Mrs. Snowden is also survived by her seven great-grandchildren, many loving nieces and nephews, and her friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Aldersgate United Methodist Church located at 4320 Bruce Road, Chesapeake. The service will be officiated by the Rev. David R. Drinkard. A private burial will be held in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions to Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is handling the arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.lovingfuneralhome.com.
