Some fifty years ago I was playing in “the yard” with Sandy, Dennis, and the gang. Saint Hannah came out to warn us… “You kids need to go home and get inside before you get soaked, it’s getting ready to rain.”
We all looked at each other in puzzlement. Not a drop had fallen, the sky was still blue, and one of us replied “but it’s not raining!” Saint Hannah went on to deliver a lesson that would become one of my fondest childhood memories.
“Look at those trees over there” she said. “You see that silver on the bottom of those leaves? When the wind starts blowing hard enough to see that silver it’s about to storm.” Minutes later the clouds rolled in and the skies opened with a drenching rain. It was like magic. She could forecast the weather.
When the news came last week I recounted the memory to Sandra (my bride of 30 years). She reminded me that I had shared the story with her when we were dating.
From that day in the yard until this very moment I think of St. Hannah with every beautiful breeze before a storm and whenever the wind exposes the silver on the bottoms of the leaves.
All our love and prayers are with you.
