James Mayhall Obituary

James R. Mayhall VIRGINIA BEACH - It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, James Richard Mayhall on Sept. 18, 2008. He was born in Shinnston, W.Va., Dec. 18, 1923, to Nora and Charles Mayhall. He was a proud member of the United States Navy from 1943 to 1964, receiving many commendations during his career in the military. After retirement, he joined the McDonald's Corporation and retired after 16 years. Our father was a quiet, unassuming man with a wicked sense of humor. He gave unconditional love to all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We will miss our Pa, and our Great PaPa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Concetta and his oldest daughter, Mary Kendall. Survivors include his three daughters, Ann Butler, Michael Cloud Butler; Margaret Garner (James); and Rose Mailhes (Al); his grandchildren, Jerry Kendall of Wisconsin, John Kendall (Heather) of Indiana, Michael Richard Butler, Troy Parker (Kendra), Joy Parker, Charles Parker (Westley), Deana Lanning (Mike), Holly Elliott (Earl), Trey Mailhes and Dustin Garner (Nanette) and Blake Garner, all of Virginia Beach; his great-grandchildren, Sarah and William Dworske, Michael Mugler, Colin, Lacy, Bailey and Sarah Kendall, Shyna and James Kendall, Tripp and Zoe Elliott, Avery, Chase and Addison Parker and soon to arrive Ethan Thomas Parker. In addition, he is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Our family would like to thank Rosa Darden for the kindness and caring she has given our father this past year. A visitation will be held Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home followed by burial in Princess Anne Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, 740 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23451. An online guestbook may be signed and online condolences may be sent at www.hdoliver.com.

Pop,

I miss you very much and have been thinking about you alot this week and what you meant to me and our family. You are the definition of "Our Greatest Generation." I dont think I even heard you compain one day of your life. I dont think there are many that live to that standard. It sickens me to see the current state of our country's financial condition. If the Wallstreet gurus all had the character of you and most of your generation, we would not be in this mess. It is amazing to me how you never missed anyone in the family's birthday or Christmas with Savings Bonds. I wish Avery, Addison, and Chase would have had the chance to get to know you when they were a little older, but dont worry, I will make sure they know how beautifully you lived your life.

I will always remember every Thursday in college whe you sent me my weekly "beer money" check. The whole fraternity knew Thursday was Pop's day. Also, I will never forget your kindness of giving me your car for me to go to college. I know you loved to walk to work every day, but that was incredibly gracious and kind. I will also remember you as a role model my entire life. The way you were our "patriarch" and the bond that held the entire family together. I will miss you dearly but I know you are in a better place with Grandma, aunt Ruth, and Mary. Please tell them I love them and miss them. I know you are now going on long walks with your dogs and catching up with all the people who passed before you.

Kendra ask me to tell you hello and she will always miss your kind smile and gentle soul.

I will continue to live my life with the hopes of continuing your legacy as one of the best human beings to ever walk the earth.

I will miss you and always cherish you.

Love,

Troy

Pop,
I will miss you very much, you have been the only father figure in my life since the day I was born (besides Jimmy many years later) and I will never forget you. You have loved me unconditionally and have always been there for me. I love you very much. I will come visit you all the time. I am glad that you are with grandma now. You can protect and lookout for your family now, be our guardian angel until we meet again. I am so thankful that I had 42 wonderful years with you. I hope Tanner has found you!!!

Love your Angel Baby
