Judith Knox Obituary


Judith M. Knox VIRGINIA BEACH - Judith Diane Mitchell Knox, 68, passed away Sept. 24, 2008, in a local hospital. She was born in Norfolk, the daughter of the late Bill and Vera Mitchell. She had a master's degree in English from Old Dominion University. Mrs. Knox was a school teacher and retired from Norfolk public schools. She was a member of Norview United Methodist Church where she served as lay leader, Sunday school teacher, and past president of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Knox served the Order of the Eastern Star as a worthy matron and grand representative of South Carolina in Virginia. She was a member of both Lynnhaven Chapter No. 184 and Bayside Chapter 181, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also queen of the Daughters of the Nile, Al Kena Temple No. 124. She was president of P. Buckley Moss Society and president of the Hummel Club. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ernest H. Knox; daughter, Vera-Allison Short and her husband Ken of Virginia Beach; son, William E. Knox and his wife Wendy of Humble, Texas; sister, Molly M. Smith and her husband Fred of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Connor and Hannah Short and Hunter and Kinsey Knox; two nieces, Lori Everett and Missi Cohn. A funeral will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Norview United Methodist Church, 1112 Norview Ave., Norfolk, VA 23513. The Rev. William Joseph Shepherd will officiate. The family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a service at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Following the service, burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made either to the American Cancer Society or Norview United Methodist Church. Judy was a dear friend for over 50 years. I had the privilege of being in her wedding and she in mine. I have many wonderful memories of this woman I loved and will dearly miss. I am blessed to have called her friend. My love and prayers to all of her family.

Judy was a wonderful sister-in-law and a close friend of the heart. She had a busy life, but she always had time to talk to you. She was a very generous and loving person and Mike and I and our family will miss her greatly.
