James Hewitt Obituary


James W. Hewitt CHESAPEAKE - James Wilson Hewitt, 88, went to be with the Lord and into the waiting arms of his beloved wife of 58 years, Delia Brinkley Hewitt, Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at his home. Mr. Hewitt was the son of the late William and Rosa Hewitt. He was a member of Welcome Baptist Church. He was a truck driver for the CC Corps in 1940 delivering sea grass to Sandbridge. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He retired after 32 years of faithful service in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he was a crane supervisor in shop 02. Daddy loved being in the home he built with his wife and oldest son. He also enjoyed spending time in his garden and being with his family. Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn H. Hartman and husband Floyd of Roanoke, JoEllen H. Gibbs and husband Bert of Chesapeake; two sons James W. Hewitt Jr. and wife Nancy of New Land, N.C., Thomas O. Hewitt and wife Linda of Chesapeake; two brothers, William L. Hewitt and wife Elaine and Morris O. Hewitt and wife Dot, all of Chesapeake; eight grandchildren, Sherry Freeman, Randy Hewitt, T.O. Hewitt Jr., Tim Hewitt, Mike Hartman, Dena Hartman, Jon Gibbs and Samantha Gibbs; 14 great- grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Joey Amory Jr. will officiate. The interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The viewing will begin today with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends are also invited to send condolences and sign the online guestbook at www.omanfh.com.
