Theodore A. Bashford VIRGINIA BEACH - Dr. Theodore Alford "Ted" Bashford, 89, went to be with the Lord Oct. 4, 2008, in Norfolk. A native of Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Edward Dawson and Mrs. Lettie Thomas Howell Bashford. He was a former welder with Norfolk Naval Shipyard. A graduate of Tennessee Temple University and Seminary, he has been the director of the Union Missions Ministries and the Union Mission Men's Shelter for the past 53 years. He was also the founder of Hope Haven Children's and Adult Home, the Family Shelter, Camp Hope Haven, The New Life Center and the Good News Network. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Marion Skeeter Bashford; five daughters, Marion and Teddy Jenkins of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., Linda Vaughan of Virginia Beach, Charlotte McPherson, Jean and Michael Melvin and Rebecca and Paul Miller, all of Chesapeake; 16 grandchildren, Karen Jenkins, Jeffery and Karen Jenkins, Mark and Shelby Jenkins, Michael and Colleen Jenkins, James and Angela McPherson Jr., Stephen and Melina McPherson, Amy and Albert Hartley, Jonathan and Kelly McPherson, Leeanne and Scott Dickerson, Kimberly Vaughan, Joshua Melvin, Angela Langston, Sarah Miller, Anna Miller, Emily Miller and Allison Miller; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Wilder of Portsmouth. A celebration of Dr. Bashford's life will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church of Norfolk. Burial will follow in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. There will be a viewing where the family will receive friends Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Burton Memorial Chapel, Hope Haven Children's Home, 3000 North Landing Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Home for Hope Capitol Campaign of the Union Mission Ministries.
