Kemp Long Obituary


Kemp Long NORFOLK - Kemp Long was born Sept. 10, 1924, in Mebane, N.C., to the late Kemp Long Sr. and Lucy Hester. Kemp was called home Oct. 11, 2008, while resting peacefully at his home of 30 years in the Ingleside community of Norfolk. Kemp was an Army veteran of the World War II and Korean conflict eras from Oct. 5, 1942 to Jan. 28, 1951 and from 1951 to May 1, 1953. Kemp retired from the Norfolk Naval Base after 21 years of civilian service as a motor vehicle operator. He also served 14 years as a crossing guard for the Norfolk public school system. Kemp was predeceased by his wife, Harriet O. Long of 31 years. Kemp also leaves to cherish his memory one stepson, William E. Hicks of Arlington, Va.; two granddaughters, Twana S. Hicks of Norfolk and Talaya Martin of Stafford, Va.; two great-grandsons; two great- granddaughters; and a host of extended family and friends. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Fitchett Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Goodbye Uncle Kemp, I will always remember you as my fun Uncle. I remember in the sixties when you came to Virginia to live with us, there was never a dull moment. You will be missed. Please say hello to my Mom and Dad.
