Bruce Dewing Obituary


Bruce Warren Dewing CHESAPEAKE - Bruce Warren Dewing died Oct. 15, 2008. He was survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Potter Dewing; three children, Douglas and former wife Christine, Andrew and wife Mary, and Henry and wife Sarah; and 12 grandchildren, Neal, Robert, Christopher, Elizabeth, Patrick, Hunter, Hannah, Katherine, Cameron, Henry Jr., Blair and Brett. He was born April 6, 1929, in Worcester, and raised in Kingston, Mass. He graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1952. He served as a Coast Guard aviator, including a tour with the International Ice Patrol. Later, he was Commanding Officer, USCGC Winnebego (WHEC-40) during a tour in Vietnam, earning a Presidential Unit Citation and the Bronze Star with valor. He retired as Chief of Personnel Fifth Coast Guard District, Portsmouth, in 1972. Following his retirement from the Coast Guard, he earned an MBA from Old Dominion University. He then worked for the City of Portsmouth school system, rising to Director of Finance. The family will receive friends at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Peter Hogg Jr. officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Elizabeth River Project, 475 Water St., Suite 103A, Portsmouth, VA 23704, the Hoffler Creek Nature Wildlife Foundation, 4510 Twin Pines Road, Portsmouth, VA 23703, or the Alzheimer's Association, 6530 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.snellingsfuneralhome.com.
