Joan Gifford Obituary

Joan D. Gifford NORFOLK - Joan D. Gifford, 85, of the 1900 block of E. Bayview Blvd., passed away Oct. 16, 2008 in Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. A native of Exeter Devonshire, England, she was the daughter of the late Madeline and Col. Theodore L. Callender. She was an active member of Bayview United Church of Christ where she served as moderator on the executive board. She founded three local companies: Gifford Realty Inc. (formally Duncan & Gifford Realtors formed in 1956, now Coldwell Banker Professional, Realtors), Gifford Management Group and Gifford Insurance Associates. She also served as founding member and president of Metro MLS (now REIN), director of the National Association of Realtors and was a recipient of the coveted Realtor of the Year award of the state of Virginia. In association with Dorcas Helfant-Browning, she was instrumental in merging the Norfolk Board of Realtors and the Virginia Beach Board of Realtors into the Tidewater Association of Realtors, which is now known as the Hampton Roads Association of Realtors. Joan was a former regional governor of the Women's Council of Realtors for the National Association of Realtors and was Professional Woman of the Year for Hampton Roads in 1984. She also participated in the forming of the Five City Merger of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce and became the first woman chairman of the Norfolk division. One of her most proud associations was with Old Dominion University where she was appointed to the Board of Visitors, served as Vice Rector and Chairman of the Education Foundation and was named an honorary alumni. In 2001, she was presented the prestigious Albert B. "Buck" Gornto Jr. Regional Service Award from ODU. In 2007, she was conferred the degree of Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from ODU. Joan served on the Foundation Board of Norfolk State University, Town Point Club, Advisory Boards of Lee's Friends, ForKids, Downtown Republican Club of Norfolk and was the chair of Cenit Bank's Advisory Board for Norfolk. Her community service included participation as board member of the Norfolk State Convention and Visitors Bureau, Norfolk Community Facilities Commission, Boy Scouts of America, Norfolk Crime Line, American Cancer Society and Central Fidelity Banks Norfolk Advisory board and Heritage Bank. She received a Proclamation of Appreciation from City of Norfolk. She was the first female Realtor to be appointed by the Governor of Virginia as a commissioner to the Virginia Housing Authority Board. She is survived by her husband, Charles S. Gifford; her son, Thomas (Tim) C. Gifford and wife Diana of Chesapeake; her daughter, Francine G. Deir and husband Edward of Norfolk; nine grandchildren, Lisa Snyder, Todd Gifford and wife Marina, Bryan Harrison, Matthew Gifford and wife Johanna, Scott Dashiell and wife Michelle, Kim Daschiell, Ed Britt and wife Shannon, Jarrod Deir and wife Susan and Daniel Deir and wife Beth; 13 great-grandchildren; her goddaughter, Beverly Efird; as well as son-in-law, Kenny Jordan and wife Mary. She was predeceased by daughter, Diann G. Jordan. Much has been written of "Dr." Joan Gifford as a tireless leader in any endeavor she adopted. Joan instilled in her family the necessity of always giving back to the community. She was a loving, supportive wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend; she will be sorely missed as the matriarch. Something tells us Joan is up in heaven, organizing something and getting things done! The funeral will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in Bayview United Church of Christ with the Rev. Harvey Lilly and the Rev. Dan Wickert officiating. The burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, today from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Lee's Friends, ("Helping People Live With Cancer"), 7400 Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, VA 23505. Dear Gifford Family,
Steve and I were so saddened to learn of Joan's death when we entered the office at Plantation Village this past week. We are grateful for the time we spent with Joan, Chuck, Francine and Tim on our last visit in February. My parents, Jack and Helen Miskel, now deceased as well loved spending time with Joan and Chuck and The Gang...they treasured their friendship and I know they are both welcoming her with open arms. She was a brave woman who taught us all how to enjoy life no matter what comes our way. God bless Joan and all of you!

We were so sorry to hear of Joan's passing. My husband and I knew Chuck and Joan from our visits to the Caymans with my Mom and Dad, Jack and Helen Miskel. My parents pictures from the Caymans are full of sunset shots with "the gang" waiting for the "green flash". Great memories of great times! Our prayers are with you, Chuck and your family.

With our deepest
sympathy,

Dear Chuck and family,
I am so saddened to hear of Joan's passing. She and my mother (Mary Teck, of blessed memory) were longtime professional associates and friends. Perhaps they're both in Heaven re-hashing their many sales and fun times together.

My sincere condolences to you and Joan's entire family at this time. May her memory always be for a blessing.

Joan bestowed many gifts that touched a multitude of lives in her 85 years. She had a grace, spirit and professionalism that many should emulate. The Navy League was fortunate to have the Giffords as long standing members and she will be missed. Our prayers go out to Chuck and their children in this difficult time.

Chuck, Tim, Francine & all the Gifford family, I was very sad to learn of Joan's passing. I was so happy that I had the opportunity to speak with her at length after the last big article about her in the paper. After reading that, I sat down and wrote Joan a letter telling her how much she had meant to me, how she was my mentor and friend. I started my career calling on Gifford Realty. Joan would always tell people that my son would play hide and seek under her desk while I worked. I would always say "Joan, he was 2, and now he's 30." I will miss you. You were the most incredible woman I had the opportunity to know.
Much love to you all.

Dearest Mr. Gifford, Tim, Francine, Matt, Johanna, Bryan, Lisa, Shannon,
and all of the family of Joan Gifford,
I sign this guest book with my deepest condolences. I was saddened
to receive the news the morning after she went to heaven. Mrs. Gifford
was such an inspiration to so many people including myself. I am so
honored to have known such an influential woman. She was such an example
of what extraordinary things a woman can do. She was a strong business
woman and yet still took the time to share in personal celebrations. I
was so happy when she came to my birthday party at Gifford. I was not
surprised to see her there because I knew she really cared about others.
I am so glad that I was able to see her that last time three weeks ago
in Francine's office and that she was able to meet my new son. I strive
to achieve the kind of success that Mrs. Gifford had in her professional
and personal life. May God be with all of you in your time of grief and
comfort you.

Sincerely,
Suzi Woolford, Steve Bowman, Abagayle Puckett, & Steven Bowman Jr.

Mrs. G., you will be truly missed; we have enjoyed working with you for the past year and will miss seeing you come to Pine Shores with Mr. G to collect the quarters. You showed me so much about flowers in the short time that I came to clean for you at your house.

Love,
