Bertha Saunders

Bertha Ruby Saunders NORFOLK - Bertha Ruby Saunders, a resident of The Chesapeake in Newport News and a former resident of 100 block of Westmont Ave. in Norfolk, passed away Oct. 19, 2008. The widow of Richard Vernon Saunders, she was a native of Southampton County and the daughter of the late Jimmy and Mattie Bradshaw Harris. She is survived by one daughter, Carol J. Saunders of Voorhees, N.J., and two nieces, Carolyn Boykin of Courtland, Va., and Cynthia Thurman of Wake Forest, N.C. She was predeceased by two sisters, Mamie Harris and Pearl Ferguson. She was a member of Ocean View Baptist Church. She retired from the Norfolk City school system as a secretary at Northside Junior High School after 15 years. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Jim McLendon officiating. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Ocean View Baptist Church.
