Stanley Smigiel Obituary


Stanley W. Smigiel NORFOLK - Stanley W. Smigiel, 84, of the 2900 block of Somerset Lane, died Nov. 4, 2008, in his residence. He was a native of McKees Rocks, Pa., and a resident of Norfolk since 1970. He was the son of the late Iganatius and Theophila Smigiel. He retired from the United States Navy as a senior chief petty officer and served his country for 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He later went to work for and retired from the City of Norfolk as Head of Maintenance for the Norfolk Public Library System. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. Mr. Smigiel is survived by his daughter, Regina M. Gechter and her husband Richard of Virginia Beach; his sons, Thomas R. Smigiel and his wife Caren of Smithfield, Va., John Joseph Smigiel of Norfolk and Stanley Steven Smigiel of Smithfield; three grandchildren, Michael Smigiel, Cheryl Holloway and Thomas R. Smigiel Jr. and three great-grandchildren, Landon Holloway, Tyler Holloway and Devin Walsh Smigiel. The funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. Thomas Powers. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the Norfolk chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at hdoliver.com.
