Ellen Huber Obituary

Ellen V. Huber NORFOLK - Ellen Virginia Byrnes Huber, 83, widow of Robert Lee Huber and longtime resident of Norfolk, died Oct. 30, 2008, after a brief illness. Born in Essex, Md., April 20, 1925, Ellen grew up in Baltimore and was also a resident of Richmond, Va., before moving to Norfolk in 1964. Ellen was the daughter of the late Charles Henry Byrnes and Genevieve McDonnell Byrnes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Huber and a son, James Mark Huber. She is survived by a sister, Catherine Blair of Catonsville, Md.; 10 children and their spouses, Barbara and Donny Price, Katherine Huber, Bill Huber, Nancy and Kenn Jolemore, Mary and Kenny Turner, all of Norfolk, Thomas Huber and Elizabeth Huber of Virginia Beach, Marian Huber and John Blandin of Parksley, John Huber and fiancée Megan O'Brien of Williamsburg and Robert and Becky Huber of Florida; grandchildren, Ananda Jolemore Southard, Brian and Amena Jolemore, Mary Ellen and Kevin Price, Sara Huber Johnson, Jessica and Kimberly Turner and Robert Huber; and great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Brandon and Damian Johnson, Jasper and Dakota Smith and Nolan Southard. Ellen led an interesting and productive life and touched many people with her kindness. She worked first as a nurse and caregiver and later as a teacher. She was an active volunteer for National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). She found time in the midst of the chaos of raising 11 children to sew their clothing, head up Scout troops, volunteer at church and school, and even help out with the Poor People's March on Washington in 1968. Ellen was a resident of Harbour Pointe Nursing Center for the past 2½ years, after suffering a stroke in May 2006. She will be missed by her dear roommate at Harbour Pointe, Melodie Phipps. The family appreciates the care and attention given to Ellen by the wonderful staff at Harbour Pointe and the compassionate nurses at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Also appreciated was the religious ministry provided by Dr. Patrick Hennelly from Sacred Heart Church. Ellen's life will be celebrated in a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Graydon Ave., Norfolk. Mass will be followed by a gathering of family and friends in the church social hall. Please share your memories of Ellen with the family at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments' site, www.hdoliver.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made NAMI, P.O. Box 8260, Richmond, VA 23226-0260. Private burial will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery.
