Michael Hayes Obituary

A. Michael Hayes Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Capt. A. Michael Hayes Jr. died Nov. 4, 2008, at his home after a 4-year battle with melanoma. Born in Baltimore April, 19 1924, Mike was the son of A. Michael Hayes and May Westcott Hayes. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Mary Martha; his son and daughter-in-law, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas Mather Hayes and Sharon K. Hayes; his daughter, Elizabeth Hayes Mullins and husband James Mullins; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. James W. Hayes of Charlottesville, Va. Mike was predeceased by his sister, Mary Kendall Eaton and a great-granddaughter, Emily Grace Hayes. Mike graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in June of 1945 (with the Class of 1946) and served 26 rewarding years on active duty, which were highlighted by four commands at sea including the submarine USS Sea Owl (SS-405) and the destroyer USS Power (DD-839). Upon retirement in 1971, Capt. Hayes was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. Beginning in September of 1973, Mike taught science in the Virginia Beach school system for 15 years. Mike wanted his students to develop a keen interest in science as they looked at future learning opportunities. Additionally, Mike began exploring his interest in the Civil War and was an avid historian. As a result, Mike and Mary Martha took numerous trips that recounted the history of the United States while visiting all 50 states. Services will be held at noon Saturday in St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Atlantic Shores Employee Gift Fund, Wachovia Bank, 1200 Atlantic Shores Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23454. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road, is handling arrangements.

Dear Mrs. Hayes,
Mother had told me that Capt. Hayes had lost his battle with melanoma. What a galliant fighter he was and I will always remember him for his courageous fight against this hideous disease and his unabiding positive outlook on life. He was thankful for his family and friends, had a passion for living and travel, and I know that you and all who touched his life will miss him terribly. As a classmate and friend of my father's at USNA, I thank him (and my father) for their dedicated service to our country. Please take care of yourself and know that you and your family are very much in our thoughts and prayers. With love, Jennifer Knight Fries and family

Dear Mrs. Hayes,
I was saddened to hear about Mr. Hayes death and want to send my deepest sympathy and prayers. I enjoyed traveling with you both on several Smithsonian study tours and remember fondly our conversations about the Civil War and many other subjects. Will Greene and I were actually on a tour together when we heard the news, and drank a toast to you both. I will be thinking of you and your family in the days ahead.
