Francis Smith Obituary


Francis E. Smith VIRGINIA BEACH - Francis Edward Smith, 101, died Nov. 9, 2008. He was born in Marlinton, W.Va., to Zed S. and Annie Maria Smith. His education was from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. and Yale University as a civil engineer. In his later years he became a hospital administrator and retired in 1973. He was a board member and director of Virginia Hospital Association and regional director of the Academy of Medical Directors. He and his wife retired in the mountains of North Carolina and later moved to Virginia Beach to live in June 1987. Survivors are his wife, Mary Lee Izlar Smith of Charleston, S.C.; three children, Stephen Smith and wife Roberta of Staunton, Va., Sara S. Jones and husband Howard E. Jones of Virginia Beach and M. Sherry Hurt and husband Ron Hurt of Glade Spring, Va.; five grandchildren, W.N. Massie of Los Angeles, Lisa S. Coleman of Barboursville, Va., Kent Massie of Virginia Beach, Emmy Rusyniak of Richmond and Cabell Massie of Hampton; and one great-grandchild, Cole Massie of Los Angeles. He served his country in World War II in the Navy. A family graveside service will be held in the family cemetery in Marlinton, W.Va. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
