William Battelle Obituary


William E. Battelle CHESAPEAKE - William Ernest Battelle, 61, of the 1300 block of Canal Drive, died Nov. 5, 2008. Mr. Battelle was born in Philadelphia, the son of the late Jacque Battelle and Ida Smith Battelle. Mr. Battelle was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army and was an Arizona Ranger. He attended St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. He was very active in feral cat rescue and was also active with CB and ham radio operation. Mr. Battelle was predeceased by his granddaughter, Penelope Valdez. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Linda L. Battelle; two daughters, Lori Valdez and her husband Roger of Portsmouth and Mary Matthews and her husband Michael of Chesapeake; a son, Matthew Battelle of Chesapeake; and grandson, Joseph Matthews of Chesapeake. Mr. Battelle is also survived by a sister, Edith Gall of Plantation, Fla., and two brothers, Frank Battelle and David Battelle, both of Tucson, Ariz. A memorial service will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday in St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 3300 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Eileen Walsh. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Chesapeake Humane Society. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Chesapeake Chapel, is handling arrangements. I'm sure Uncle "Billy" is in a better place now. I haven't seen him since I was very young but somehow I feel a loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to the rest of the family.
