Charles R. Dalton Jr. NORFOLK - Charles Robert Dalton Jr. died Nov. 21, 2008. He was born in Norfolk Feb. 25, 1924, and was a resident of Harbor's Edge retirement community in Norfolk at the time of his death. Bobby was predeceased by his parents, Charles Robert Dalton and Evelyn Caulfield Dalton, and is survived by his brother, John C. Dalton of Wellesley Hills, Mass. He is also survived by his wife of 59 years, Juliet Nutt Dalton; their four children, Sarah Dabney Jacob of New Orleans, Margaret Dalton Land of Norfolk, Charles Munford Dalton of State College, Pa., and Elizabeth Dalton Schilling of San Francisco; and eight grandchildren, Margaret Blair Truslow, Anne Hamilton Jacob, Juliet McLure Land, Charles Edwards Land Jr., Robert Charles Dalton, Andrew Caulfield Dalton, Thomas McLure Schilling and Sarah Price Schilling. Bobby attended both Maury High School and Granby High School, graduating from Granby in 1942. He attended undergraduate school at the University of Virginia for two years before leaving to serve in the United States Navy during World War II, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. He then returned to the University of Virginia where he attended law school and took an LL.M degree in 1949. After law school Bobby returned to Norfolk where he worked in several jobs, notably as an assistant U.S. Attorney before taking a job at the law firm then known as Hughes, Little & Seawell, where he specialized in the practice of maritime law. He stayed to become the managing partner of the firm which ultimately became known as Seawell Dalton. Following the dissolution of the firm, he continued to practice law as a sole practitioner for a number of years. He was an active member of a number of bar-related organizations, primarily the Maritime Law Association. Bobby was a member of Christ & St. Luke's Church where he served on the vestry, and was also a member of the board of directors of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He much enjoyed his experience as a volunteer teacher at the University of Virginia Law School. Over the years, he was a member of a number of social organizations, but none was more important to him than the Virginia Club in his later years. The family wishes to thank his loving caregivers and the staff at Harbor's Edge. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or other charity of the donor's choice. A funeral will be held Monday at noon in Christ & St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Norfolk. Arrangements are being handled by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel.
