Evelyn Hargrove Obituary


Evelyn B. Hargrove VIRGINIA BEACH - Evelyn Burton Hargrove passed away Nov. 19, 2008. Born June 17, 1920 to John M. Burton and Eva Bateman Burton, she lived most of her life at Princess Anne Courthouse. Evelyn graduated from Kempsville High School and was a longtime substitute teacher at Kellam High School. She was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church, Dorcas Sunday School Class and St. Johns Baptist Church. Evelyn loved wildlife, especially her raccoons, squirrels, hummingbirds and foxes. You could also find her puttering about the flower beds and trees. She was a true Southern Lady who enjoyed her family and many friends. A dedicated mother, grandmother and dutiful wife, Evelyn is survived by her husband of 68 years, Roland E. Hargrove Sr. Also surviving are a daughter, Diane H. Schmidt and husband Curtis, Buddy Hargrove and wife Jody and John Hargrove and wife Evie; a granddaughter, Jeanne Horton and husband Keith and great-grandchildren, Tyler Horton and Casey Horton, all of Virginia Beach; a sister, Marilyn Ross of Colusa, Calif., and many nieces and nephews. Special friendships were developed with her caregivers, Sally, Rosemarie, Ann and many others at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. A visitation will be held Sunday between 2 and 4 p.m. in H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, Virginia Beach. A private immediate family-only entombment service will be conducted Monday prior to a memorial service at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Princess Anne County Virginia Beach Historical Society, 2040 Potters Road, Virginia Beach, VA or a charity of your choice.
