Ivy Stone Obituary

Ivy T. Stone VIRGINIA BEACH - Ivy Jewell Thompson Stone, 91, passed away peacefully in her bed in Virginia Beach on Tuesday morning, Nov. 25, 2008. Her survivors include a son, Stephen Stone of Virginia Beach; a grandson, Mike Stone of Atlanta; a granddaughter and great-grandson, Jennifer and Romeo Stone of Novara, Costa Rica; three sisters, Marty Foster of Mobile, Ala., Honey Hines of Mount Dora, Fla., and Katherine Havens of Butte, Mont.; many nieces and nephews. Jewell was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Danville. The family moved to Norfolk during the Depression. Jewell's father passed away leaving her, a brother and five sisters to fend for themselves and care for their invalid mother. Jewell falsified her age to get a job to contribute to the family's welfare. This extremely close-knit family pulled together and helped each other survive those difficult times. In the end, Jewell and all her siblings enjoyed long lives, happy marriages and above average children. In 1943, she married Harold Jones Stone. They were totally devoted to each other for 63 years until Harold's death last year. They lived most of their lives in Hampton and were very active in the Central Methodist Church. Jewell enjoyed being a wife, mother and homemaker. She loved to cook and entertain, sewed beautifully and did many crafts. Jewell was a true Southern belle. A beautiful and gracious woman, she never left the house looking anything but her best. She paid the same attention to her friends and family as she did to her appearance. She always was ready with a kind word and a helping hand. Her friends knew they could depend on her for anything except driving safely. Jewell was a survivor of both breast cancer and lung cancer. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society in her name. A memorial service will be held Monday, Dec. 8, at the First Colonial Inn, 845 First Colonial Road, Virginia Beach. The service starts at 1 p.m. followed by a reception.
