Lalla Hansen Obituary

Lalla Gaskins Hansen NORFOLK - Lalla Gaskins Hansen, 83, died peacefully on Wednesday evening, Nov. 26, 2008. Born in Windsor, N.C., to Eugene V. and Evie Leigh Gaskins, she attended East Carolina Teachers College (now ECU), before marrying the late Peter A. Hansen, whom she met in Washington, D.C., while working for the American Red Cross after World War II. As the wife of a career naval officer, Lalla traveled extensively, but even while raising two children, she found time to devote to her community, most notably volunteering over two decades for the Navy Relief Society. She proudly claimed membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Great Bridge Chapter, along with other service organizations like the Women's Club and groups affiliated with the Episcopal Church. She found much comfort in her church. She is survived by both children, Linda Anderson and Eugene Hansen of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Carter Collins of Cary, N.C., Peter C. Hansen of Virginia Beach and Austin Anderson, who currently is teaching in Indonesia; and four great- grandchildren. One of Lalla's three sisters survives her, Emily W. Carter, of Atlantic Shores, Virginia Beach. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Church of the Good Shepherd. Lalla will be cremated and later interred in Arlington National Cemetery next to her husband. Memorial contributions may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Hampton Blvd., Norfolk, or to a charity of one's choice.
