James Reid Obituary


James A. Reid VIRGINIA BEACH - James Allington Reid passed away at the age of 90 Dec. 1, 2008, in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. He was born in Rocky Mount, N.C., to the late William and Ruth Reid. Al served in the U.S. Navy, retiring with 20 years of honorable service, achieving rank of chief petty officer. He was extremely proud of his service to our country and fondly recalled tours of duty which took him to 32 foreign countries. As an original plank owner, Al could often be seen wearing his USS Wisconsin hat, having taken part in the battleships' commissioning while assigned to the ship in Philadelphia. Having seen action aboard numerous ships during World War II and the Korean conflict, Al received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, China Service Medal and the National Defense Service Ribbon. Upon retirement from active duty service, Al worked for civil service for 28 years, primarily in Portsmouth, retiring again in 1985. Al is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Reid of Virginia Beach; his son, James Reid and his wife Janice of Ontario, Calif.; William Reid and his wife Gaye of Virginia Beach; Andy Reid and his wife Lori of Virginia Beach; Mary Cushionbury and her husband Mike of Alburtis, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Jonathan Reid, James Reid, Katie Basset, Meredith Reid, Hailey Reid, Alaina Reid, Julie Reid and Mary Kate Reid. As a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Al enjoyed worshipping there and enjoyed the fellowship of its parishioners. Al will be remembered by his family for his commitment to his family, his unswerving sense of honesty and fairness. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Virginia Beach. Burial will be at Eastern Shore Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I worked under James as a boilermake apprentice for about 2 years. He knew his job and knew how to instruct me so that I could learn the trade....I have since moved up and retired myself from the Office of Personnel Management, and my sucess was due in part to the lessons learned from James.
