Arthur Beckwith Obituary


Arthur W. Beckwith KITTY HAWK - Arthur W. "Captain" Beckwith, 62, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones Nov. 29, 2008. Art was born Dec. 12, 1945, in Morristown, N.J., the son of the late Walton F. and Olga K. Beckwith. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Virginia L. Davenport Beckwith. He is survived by his daughter, Dae Marie Knighton of Louisiana; a stepson, David J. Davenport of Manteo, N.C.; two brothers, Timothy and Robert N. Beckwith; as well as his grandchildren; and loving companion, Mary L. Gorsuch. Art graduated from Gill St. Bernard High School in New Jersey, where he was an outstanding basketball player and then attended Gunstock College in New Hampshire. He retired from the Kill Devil Hills Utilities Department as a Grade IV chief wastewater treatment plant operator. Art was a Master Mason with Prospect Lodge No. 24 in New Jersey. He was the founder and captain of the Kitty Hawk F Team, which won numerous fishing tournaments. Art enjoyed hunting, golfing, gardening, bird watching and walking the beach collecting seashells and beach glass. He had a deep appreciation for environmental conservation. A memorial service will be held at the Manteo Masonic Lodge No. 521, 301 Virginia Dare Blvd. (Highway 64/264), Manteo, Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at 10 a.m. with internment following at Ramp 27 on Hatteras Island, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group, 245 Woodland Drive, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949 or the Kitty Hawk Fire Dept., P.O. Box 207, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is assisting the family with arrangements. Visit www.twifordfh.comto sign the online register.
