Raymond Carroll Obituary


Raymond W. Carroll SMITHFIELD - Raymond Wade Carroll, 79, passed away Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, in Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Gates County, North Carolina, Raymond had been a Smithfield resident most of his life. An Army veteran of Korea, Raymond was a member of the American Legion, Post 49, Smithfield. He was a life member of Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Smithfield Baptist Church. Raymond was a devoted husband and beloved father, grandfather and brother. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 54 years, Joanne T. Carroll; his children, Linda Sue and Joey Mitchell, Jo Ray and Dale Johnson, Anne and Bruce Rainey and Margaret and Barry Babb; grandchildren, Chuck and Nicholas Mitchell, Emily Johnson and Brandon Babb; brothers and sisters, Thomas Carroll (Wanda), Dorothy Pittman (Charles), Percy Carroll (Brenda), Mary Oliver (Vernon) and Lillian Whitley (Dennis). A life celebration service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, with the Rev. Dr. Donald Rhoton officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home and at other times in the home. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, VA 23431 or to the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 117, Smithfield, VA 23431.

Joanne, Linda Sue, and all...I will miss seeing Raymond ride by in that pick-up truck... Of course, I worked with him at the oil companies years ago but we've been neighbors for such a long time. My deepest sympathy to you all...Raymond had a kind, kind heart and I can hear him now saying, "You've gotta be tough to live in this world." I had plans to be out of town so I won't make it to any of the service/visitation....Will try to get by to see you Joanne in the near future..
