David Grainger Obituary

David Lee Grainger VIRGINIA BEACH - David Lee Grainger, 72, passed away Dec. 8, 2008. He was known by his friends as Gus, Nubby or even Lipps. He was born in Fond Du Lac, Wis., Nov. 14, 1936. David was in the 82nd and the 101st Airborne U.S. Army in Korea where he was an American POW. After the war ended, he moved from Wisconsin to Virginia. He was a volunteer fireman. David was a Boy Scout leader at Scott Memorial Methodist Church Troop 62. He worked as a mechanic at several places in Virginia Beach, where he had many friends that respected him for who he was. Gramps or Pops, which the kids called him, had names for everyone like Fred, George, Twiggy or just Boy. David is survived by his wife, JoAnn, of 45 years, whom he married Dec. 6. They had three sons, Curtis, Rodney and Alan. They also have an adopted son, Christopher, helping him after he had rough time in his life. He has four other sons, David Michael, Bruce, Richard and Bill, who all live in Wisconsin, from a previous marriage. He is also survived by his sisters, Sharon, Geraldine and Bev; a brother, Kenneth; 26 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Scott Memorial United Methodist Church, 409 First Colonial Road, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. in Altmeyer Funeral Home, Baltic Ave. and 18th St., Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the family to help with medical bills. The family will miss David, his jokes and his kindness toward people needing help. He never refused anyone help and would give them the shirt off his back.

Granny, Rodney,
Sorry to hear the bad news. I would have been there, but I'm in Iraq right now. Pop is gonna be missed. I loved hanging around the garage after "quitten time" and talkin with him. I often stayed way to late and heard about it when I got home. Really gonna miss lunch time. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the whole family.

To JoAnn and the entire family, I am so sorry for your loss. It has been my honor to know Gus for over 35 years and never knew him to say a angry word. He will be missed by all who knew him. I will call Moose Miller and tell him the sad news. All of you will be in our prayers.
