Martin Mulderrig Obituary


Martin J. Mulderrig Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Martin Joseph Mulderrig Jr., 92, went to be with the Lord Dec. 10, 2008. Martin was born in the Bronx, N.Y., Nov. 1, 1916. He was a 1940 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. During his career, he was a commanding officer of the ALSTEDE (AF-48) and was a Bronze Star with Combat V recipient. Martin was awarded the Purple Heart for action in the Battle of SAVO Nov. 12, 1942. Upon retiring from the U.S. Navy, Martin embarked on a second career with the Virginia Beach school system where he was a math teacher, assistant principal of Frank W. Cox and Princess Anne High School and finally, director of pupil personnel, retiring in 1983 after 22 years of service. After retiring from the Virginia Beach school system, he served as a member of the Virginia Beach School Board. He received a master's degree from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. Martin was past president of the Lake Shores Civic League and twice president of the Princess Anne Ruritan Club. He was a member of the Naval Academy Alumni Association, the Retired Officers Association and the Fleet Reserve Association. Marty served as a Catholic Eucharistic minister at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel until 2002 when he had a stroke. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Shirley; sons, Martin Lee and wife Elaine, Kevin Michael, Brian Hopkins (deceased) and Craig William. Martin had four grandchildren, Deanna Mulderrig, Shane Mulderrig, Logan Mulderrig and Tyler Edwards. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, 1457 Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23455, Chaplain James Fedor officiating. His ashes will be taken to the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery for a graveside service Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
