Willard Flemming Obituary

Willard L. Flemming CHESAPEAKE - Willard L. "Willie" Flemming, 84, passed away Jan. 13, 2009, in Fort Meyers, Fla. He was born Nov. 30, 1924, the son of the late Willie M. and Mary Jones Flemming. He retired from Verizon phone company after 40 years of service. He graduated from Winchester Community College with degrees in masonry and electrical engineering. He was a member of the telephone pioneers. Willard served as deacon and Sunday school superintendent at the Calvary Baptist Church in Winchester, Va., serving for many years. He was a loving husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be missed by all who knew him. Willard enjoyed spending the winter months in sunny Florida and summers in Winchester. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bertha of Winchester; his son, Chet and his girlfriend Liz Hopkins of Norfolk; also surviving are his sister, Mary Alice Hodge of Chesapeake; his brother, Joe and his wife Connie Flemming of Chesapeake; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Jolliff of Newport News. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews who brought much joy to his life. The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Zack Deal will officiate. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The viewing will begin Monday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made in Willard's name to Calvary Baptist Church, 844 Amherst St., Winchester, VA 22601. Friends are invited to sign the online guestbook at www.omanfh.com.

Mrs. Flemming and Chet, we are all so sorry to hear of your loss. Mr. Willie was a true gentleman and I'll always remember sitting around talking about the old times. An all-around good guy! He'll be dearly missed but the memories of my visits will live on.
