Lyle Vick Obituary

Lyle O. Vick Sr. SUFFOLK - Lyle Oland "Dick" Vick, 90, passed away Jan. 16, 2009, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. Lyle was born Dec. 23, 1918, in Portsmouth to the late Kenneth Thomas and Annie Laurie Vick. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Audrey Parker Vick, Sherry Swindell, daughter, and Don Flora of Suffolk; a grandson, Lyle Thomas Vick and wife Debbie of North Carolina; two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Madison Vick. He is also survived by four brothers and sisters, Irene Weaver, Robert D. Vick, Ralph L. Vick and Betty W. Hoover; a sister-in-law, Mildred Harris and also LeeAnne Szwydek and Arlene Lindsay. He was predeceased by his son, Lyle O. Vick "Dickie" Jr. and his wife Patricia Leitner Vick; in addition to 12 siblings, Virgie Watson, Clara Vaughan, Marion Brown, Kenneth Vick, Annie Hanbury, Doris Laughon, Marvin Vick, Daniel Vick, Eldridge Vick, Katherine Creecy, Linwood Vick and Franklin Vick. Lyle served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the AR21, Dianthus, Japan. He was a boatswain's mate and served in the drum and bugle corps while in Great Lakes, Ill. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he worked in Shop 26 as a welder and also for Underwater Explosive Research Barge, Berth 43, Davy Taylor Model Basin, Md. The family would like to thank Marie Gaskins of Home Sweet Home and the administrator and staff of Mayfair House. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Nansemond River Baptist Church by the Rev. Timothy L. Piland. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Monday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and will also be at 204 Roundtable Arch, Suffolk. After the service, a celebration of life will be held at 3309 Michelle Court, Chesapeake. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

My prayers are with Mr Vick and his family. He helped me out when I first started at UERD in the late 60's and early 70's. Always a nice man. I called him Mr Vick then and continue to do so.
