Martha Cherry Obituary

Martha J. Cherry PORTSMOUTH - Martha Jane Cherry, 93, went to the Lord Jan. 21, 2009, at home surrounded by her family. This date of Jan. 21, 2009, was Mom and Dad's 75th wedding anniversary. Dad died in 1999 and we know that they celebrated their anniversary together. Mrs. Cherry a native of Carteret County, North Carolina, the widow of Arthur Lee Cherry was the daughter of the late Edger and Luta Marie Bell Tynes. She was a member of Churchland Baptist Church for more than 61 years. She was predeceased by a son, Donald C. Cherry. Survivors include her children, Bradford L. Cherry and wife Julianne, Geneva Cherry Viola and husband Emil, Arthur Lee Cherry III and wife Sue; nine grandchildren, Leann C. Bakht and husband Shoaib, Lori C. Baccanari and husband David, Ross Cherry and wife Tara, Chip Cherry and wife Betty, Dale Cherry and wife Laura, David Lee Cherry and wife Terri, Suzann Leary, Julie Petty and husband Mike, Christie Gray and husband Jason; 18 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; two brothers-in-law, James L. Cherry and Jessie A. Felton; two sisters-in-law, Jackie Cherry and Ann Cherry. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Churchland Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Coleman and the Rev. Dr. R. Clint Hopkins. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Baker-Foster Funeral Home, Bennett's Creek Chapel, 5685 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk. Memorial donations may be made to Churchland Baptist Church, 3031 Churchland Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23321. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com. Special thanks to Dr. Shoaib Bakht, Pat Yoder and the other care givers for years of special care and contributions to our mother's health and well being.
