Mary Smallwood Obituary

Mary G. Smallwood ZUNI - Mrs. Mary Estelle Gurkin Smallwood, 93, passed from this life to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Jan. 21, 2009. Mrs. Smallwood was born Dec. 25, 1915, a native of Pinetown, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Jim and Martha Gurkin. She was married to Robert Henry Smallwood Sr., who preceded her in death. She was a member of Broadmoor Pentecostal Holiness Church in Chesapeake and was a retired seamstress. Mrs. Smallwood is survived by her children, Ruth and her husband Carlos Stringfield, Phyllis Williamson, Robert H. Smallwood Jr. and Betty and her husband Roy Orsborne; her 14 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; her brother, Archie Rudolph Gurkin; and a host of fine nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington, officiated by Charles Latham. Burial will follow in the Gurkin cemetery located on Long Ridge Road. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service in the funeral home. We are comforted looking forward to being reunited with her one glorious day. I Thessalonians 4:13: "...we do not sorrow as others who have no hope."
