Alan Spickard Obituary

Alan I. Spickard NORFOLK - Alan I. Spickard passed away Jan. 24, 2009. He was born in Botetourt County April 15, 1929. He was the second youngest child of James and Eliza Spickard. His father worked for Norfolk and Western Railroad and he was transferred to Norfolk. There Alan met and married his wife of 59 years Martha Litchfield. Alan worked in the steel industry, rising from a position of welder to master draftsman. He retired from Virginia Carolina Steel in 1997 at the age of 68. Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Tyna Smelser and husband Gene of Virginia Beach and Susan Ross and husband David of Conway, N.C.; grandchildren, Lisa Hernandez and husband Rhoneil and Brian Smelser and Crystal Ross; great-grandchildren, Silas and Rachel Hernandez and Cody Ferguson; and two sisters, Lena Tarkenton and Betty Meador and husband Maynard. Alan loved sports, all things mathematical and technical. He loved his family and had a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held in Bayside Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Mark Pullen and the Rev. David Ross. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
