Alma Jones Obituary

Alma Austin Jones NORFOLK - Alma Austin Jones, 84, of the 1600 block of Keswick Drive, passed away Jan. 23, 2009, in Sentara Leigh Hospital. She was born April 10, 1924, to the late Fannie Burford Austin and James Austin in Ahoskie, N.C. She was educated in the Norfolk public school system. Alma was a member of New Bethel Cathedral, Hampton, where she served on the mother's board and hospitality committee. She was a former member of Rising Sun Baptist Church, Norfolk. Alma retired after 30 years of service with the Norfolk Naval Base as a food service manager. She was predeceased by her husband, Herman Jones. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Francis Cuffee and Anita Burt (Derick); three sons, Sherman Austin (Barbara), Dr. Melvin Austin (Claudine) and Elder Randolph Austin (Bernadette); two sisters, Evelyn Mackey (Rev. James Mackey) and Laura Smith (Bishop John Smith); one brother, James Austin (Mary); 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 120 W. Berkley Ave. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at the chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered at www.metropolitanfuneralservice.com.
