Marvin Henry Obituary

Marvin D. Henry PORTSMOUTH - Marvin D. Henry, "Marv Henry," died Feb. 16, 2009. Marv was born Jan. 6, 1928, to the late Evelyn and Sigmund Henry in Venice, Calif. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Gloria Kirkpatrick and Bonnie Peacock, both of the greater Los Angeles area. Marv enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he served as a hospital corpsman. After the war, he worked with Horace Heidt, did some acting on television and then worked as a disc jockey in Minneapolis on radio stations WLOL and KSTP. In 1964, he moved with his family to Portsmouth where he hosted the "Dialing for Dollars" and "Morning Drive Time" shows on WAVY-TV and radio. Marv had a long and successful career as a radio TV talent throughout the Tidewater area, first with WAVY and then with WFOG and WTAR. Most recently, until his illness would not allow it, he was affiliated with Studio Center where his voice was recorded for numerous local and national radio and television commercials and programs. Marv was known as "The Man of Many Voices." He was also a longstanding member and past president of Temple Sinai of Portsmouth. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Lynne Henry of Portsmouth, Gary and Karen Henry of Lawrence, Kan., and Eric Henry; three much-loved grandchildren, Jill, Aaron and Jeff Henry; and his dog, Zoey. His family is eternally grateful for the loving care and support given by Dr. Jeorge Cortina, the nurses and staff at the VA hospital in Hampton, Comfort Care Hospice of Chesapeake and special thanks to our dear friend and neighbor, Susan Adams. A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Temple Sinai, 1440 Hatton Point Road, Portsmouth. The family will receive friends in their home immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Temple Sinai, the VA Hospice in Hampton or a charity of choice.

Was looking thru some old photos and came across this one of my Mother (Bonnie Henry Peacock) and my Uncle Marv. I don't remember ever meeting him personally however I think he looks so much like my Grandfather Sigmund... tall & handsome.
My condolence's to his family for his graduation.
I certainly wish I could have met him... he sounds like a great man.

I remember Marv on WTAR doing all sorts of voices. The voices and his humour are unsurpassed. We were lucky to have him in the Hampton Roads market.

To the Henry Family...It was my pleasure to work with Marv back in the 70's at WFOG/WLPM radio stations. He was full of talent and class and always took great joy in helping others. Bravo Marv!

Dear Henry Family,

I never met Marv, but heard a lot of great things about him during my 10 years in Hampton Roads radio.
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

Mrs. Henry,
I had the extreme pleasure of working with Marv for many years at Studio Center. He was an amazing teacher. I was always in complete and utter awe of his talent and wit. I will always cherish our Film Nior chats... scratch that- I will cherish every memory of him that I have.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Sincerely,
Crizti Walsh

When I moved to Hampton Roads, Marv was one of the first people I met. We immediately hit it off together when he discovered that I, too, was a war movie buff and amateur historian. When I engineered and produced at Studio Center, Marv and I would talk between takes and after recording about some actual war event or, in most cases, the hollywood version of it. In spite of our age differences, Marv always treated me as an equal and a professional. I'll miss him more now and will always remember how he portrayed me in his drawings. I never realized I had that much hair. May God keep you close, Marv and now it's time to rest. God bless you.

I was one of the guys responsible for bringing Marv to WAVY back in 1964. He has to rank as one of the best things that ever happened to Tidewater Broadcasting. Marv was a fantastic talent who always had time for others. His talent, his wit, his willingness to do whatever it took to get the job done, will always be remembered.

If God ever gets a sore throat, He now has Marv to help out.

May his soul find eternal peace and rest and may God comfort those Marv left behind. He was one of those people who leave a positive imprint on the lives of all of those fortunate people who ever knew him.

I will always remember with great joy the tales Marv wove about Hollywood, and the golden years of radio and television. His quit wit and wry sense of humor never failed to make me laugh. The "Green Room" at Studio Center was always a pleasant place to wait as long as Marv was there. I will keep him always near and dear to my heart.

Dear Barbara and family,

I'm Steve Thomas and I had the pleasure of working with Marv when I was with WLTY/WTAR. It was always great talking with Marv about the business and voice work. He introduced me to Studio Center when they were looking for someone to do a Jamaican accent when he was'nt available

I enjoyed knowing and working with him and I extend my most sincere sympathies and condolences on his passing. May God give you and yours peace and solace until that great day when we will all meet again. Take care.
