Carl Rose Obituary

Carl M. Rose PORTSMOUTH - Carl M. Rose, 94, departed this life peacefully Feb. 19, 2009. Mr. Rose was born Feb. 4, 1915 in Hyde County, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Jeptha and Armeda Sadler Rose. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Edna Smith Rose of Hertford, N.C.; sisters, Janie Mae Deal of Portsmouth, Willie Bell Rose of Hyde County; and a brother, William Facitt Rose of Princess Anne County. Mr. Rose was raised on a farm in Princess Anne County. He was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth. He co-owned and operated Turntable Grocery in Cradock for 18 years. He later retired from Yorktown Naval Weapons Station after 20 years of service. Mrs. Rose's agricultural youth led him to his gardening activities during his retirement. He truly loved working in the field and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. He cultivated and distributed a variety of fresh vegetables, but was most proud of his "collard patch" through which he acquired many new friends and acquaintances. Those he loved and left behind are his sons, Carlton J. Rose and his wife Mary Sawyer Rose of Portsmouth, Dannie C. Rose of Portsmouth, Donnie M. Rose of Suffolk; grandchildren, Carol Rose Whitehurst and husband David of Virginia Beach, Carlton J. Rose Jr. and his wife Kathy of Monroe, Mich., Christine Rose Worrell and her husband Bobby of Portsmouth, Dawn Rose Provost and her husband Leonard of Suffolk, Sam Rose and his wife Tasha of Newport News, Adam Rose of Newport News, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of loving relatives and friends. Mr. Rose was an active member of Alliance Church in Portsmouth. He was a member of the senior men's Sunday school class as well. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, and a true friend to others. Family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, 5201 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth. A celebration of Mr. Rose's life will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Alliance Church, with the Rev. Palmer L. Zerbe presiding. Burial next to his beloved wife Edna in Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery will follow. Memorial donations may be made to the Alliance Church, 5809 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23701. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Rose family. I have so many loving memories of your Dad. Your Mom and Dad were always so loving to me. Your Father was truly a Virginia Gentleman. Cherish his memories and his golden qualities because he had so many. I will be thinking of you all during this difficult time.

Mr. Rose was a fine gentleman. We only knew him through Dominion Village Assistance Living. He was across the hall of my mother Margery Henry. I know he will be missed by all. Our deepest sympathy.

It is with great sadness I write this note to the family of Carl Rose. You have lost someone very special. He was one of the kindest and sweetest gentlemen I have ever known. While no words of mine can ease your loss, I want you to know I am grieving with you. May the wonderful memories you have fill your hearts and give you comfort during this sad time. I am certainly going to miss the weekly phone conservations I shared with Mr. Rose over the past several years. Donnie, Carlton, and Dannie, you and your families will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. You are a very special family to me!
