Harvey Martin Obituary

Harvey L. Martin NORFOLK - Harvey L. "Sarge" Martin, 66, passed away Feb. 22, 2009, in Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. He was born May 24, 1942, in Peoria, Ill. The son of Jewel Labelle and the late Ralph Martin, Harvey was a beloved son, husband, brother, father and grandfather. In addition to his mother, Harvey is survived by his wife of 44 years, Virginia "Ginny" Martin; his son, Robert W. Martin and wife Debbie and his daughter Sharon and her husband Shawn M. Paul. He has six beloved grandchildren, Chris, Amanda, Austin and Kyle Martin and Brandon and Justin Paul. Harvey had several nieces and nephews in Illinois plus nephews John and Michael Bishop of Virginia Beach and Eddie and niece Marilyn Harvey, also of Virginia Beach. Harvey is also survived by four sisters, Nadine and husband Jerry Pasley, Sandi and the late Steve Maltby, Margaret and husband Jim and Junie and husband Tom Tarvin. Sarge proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was a Vietnam veteran serving in Danang. He served 26 years on the Norfolk Police Dept. and retired as a sergeant with the second precinct. He also was a detective with the Youth Bureau and was assigned to the Traffic Bureau Division. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was Knight of the Year in 1978-1979. He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion, Fraternal Order of Police and the Marine Corps League. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fraternal Order of Police, Commodore Lodge No. 3, 1111 Harmony Road, Norfolk or the Staff Sergeant Whitehouse Young Marines, 1070 Johnston Road, Norfolk, VA, 23513. Harvey served his country, his community and was a beloved family member and friend. Harvey loved his family and was a devoted PopPop to his grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, with the Rev. Lamar Sentell officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.

He was a very good friend and welcomed me when I first came to Norfolk. I remember the days that we would go to every little fishing hole looking for that big catfish.
