John Covell Obituary

John G. Covell CHESAPEAKE - John George "Jack" Covell, 75, of the 1400 block of Ardmore Circle, died Feb. 25, 2009, in Chesapeake. A native of Riverton, Ill., he was the son of the late John Robert and Mary Ruffner Covell. A veteran of the Korean War, he retired from the U.S. Navy with 21 years of service and from the Public Works Department of the Naval Operations Base, Norfolk. He was a member of South Norfolk Baptist Church, Berkley Masonic Lodge No. 167, Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies, Provost of Khedive Temple, American Legion Post No. 357 and the Fleet Reserve. He was most recently employed with Enterprise Rental Cars. Surviving are his wife, Frances S. Covell; his mother-in-law, Annie Irene Carley; a daughter, Cindy Covell of Chesterfield; a son, John Robert "Bobby" Covell and his wife Kimberly of Chesapeake; two stepsons, William R. Valentine III of Monroe, Ga., and George Randolph Valentine of Panama City, Fla.; a sister, Shirley Bates of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Amber McHendry, Joseph Covell, Bobbi Christine Covell, Joshua Kyle Covell and Jacqueline Rae Covell; three great-grandchildren; and a dear family friend, Kathy Cain. A funeral with military honors will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, with the Rev. David Slayton officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to South Norfolk Baptist Church, 1101 Chesapeake Ave., Chesapeake, VA 23324.
