Our deepest sympathy to the Barlow family. Mr. Gene taught our daughter, Jennifer, 23 years ago at Smithfield High and she was very challenged by his expertise in math. She is saddened by his passing as we are. We know he will be well remembered by his students. He and his family have been great neighbors and friends throughout the years.
With deepest sympathy..Lorrie & Gary Trout

To The Barlow Family,
Mr. Gene Barlow was on of my favorite teachers and when ever I would see him, we would still have conversations about his class, my brother, and my teaching career in Surry. Math was always one of my best subjects and I really enjoyed Algebra under Mr. Barlow.

Class of '67: Mr. Gene Barlow was that rare teacher who inspired, presented subject matter in a clear and concise manner, and genuinely was interested in each and everyone of his students. What a wonderful legacy he will leave behind! He imparted so much knowledge to all of his students - we are all better individuals because of this great teacher and humanitarian's influence on our lives. My sincere sympathies to the Barlow family.

I had the good fortune of having Mr. Barlow as an advanced math teacher; and I was always "amazed" at his enthusiasm and ability to relate difficult abstract concepts to the real world. I can only think of ONE professor at the university level who could match his ability to relate to the real world.

Thru Mr. Barlow's capacity to teach at the University level, I was able to "breeze" thru 5 hour freshman calculus at VPI. Thank you, Mr. Barlow!

I had the foresight to contact Mr. Barlow by phone about eight years ago (year 2000) to let him know that he was ONE of my "top 10" High School teachers. I thanked him for his ability to take me, a lump of clay, and increase my capacity to relate to abstract concepts - concepts that were critical to my success at VPI and Johns Hopkins University.

I pray that he is in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. With each year, I am becoming more "homesick" for all of the beloved people that have had a part in my success, both as an engineer and a businessman.

I am forever indebted to his committment to give the students "in a small rural town" a world-class education in Math. Today, I stand tall on the back of his efforts and I thank God for sending Gene into my life.

Well done, Gene; you were a good and faithful servant to your students.

May God be with you at this difficult time. Mr. Barlow was a fine man and a wonderful teacher. He was one of my favorite teachers during my Senior year at Smithfield High School in 1978. He at one point taught all of my brothers, I know this as it was the first thing he informed me as he was taking roll on the first day of Physics class the first day of school.

My condolences to the Barlow family. When my sister, Nancy, called me and said that Mr. Barlow had passed I immediately began to remember the wonderful experiences I had in his Algebra II class, 1974-75. What a master teacher he exemplfied. I can see him now roaming from student to student assisting with problems and not leaving us until he was assured that we had mastered the skill. As a student of Mr. Barlow's in the mid seventies, those were still the early days of total integration in a 'southern' state like Virginia. I am proud to say that never did Mr. Barlow make any difference or show indifference to any of us as it was his mission to make sure that each and everyone of us was able to master the skills that were needed in order to be successful in his class. He would show us difference ways to accomplish a math problem if we did not understand it the way that the book had suggested or the way that everyone one else in the class had mastered the problem. The other great quality that I remember is that he taught with a gentile spirit, therefore, the learning environment was welcoming and condusive for learning. Thank you, The Barlow Family, for sharing Mr. Barlow with so many of us who have gone on to accomplish so much because of his tuteluge. May God's love and grace shine down upon the great gift of 'Gene' Barlow.

Mr. Barlow was an outstanding teacher who taught all three of our sons at Smithfield High, he was a friend to us, me and Patricia as well. He was always willing to sit down and talk to you about how your children were doing and what you could do to help them improve. He had a way of making you know that he genuinely cared about your child as an individual, which he did. He undestood the learning process better than any teacher I have ever known. I will never forget the day one of my sons came home and told us, Dad, do you know what a "Hokie is" of course I said, yes, he then said Mr. Barlow answered one of our students questions today by tell us the story of how the "Hokie name" came about, and then gave us the "Hokie cheer". We have two "Hokies" and a "Keydet",thanks to his teaching success. What a great man he was to our family. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who really got to know him.

Mr. Barlow was an outstanding teacher and a fine gentleman. He was a man who genuinely loved and truly understood his subject matter, a man who cared about his students even long after they moved on.

No one could have prepared me better for a math-intensive college career, and for all that followed from there.

I owe so much to Mr. Barlow. I hope he knew how much we all appreciated him.

Mr. Barlow was an outstanding teacher. He had a great sense of humor and taught us much more than what was printed in our text books. He had a way or relating his life experiences to us and by doing so taught us much about life. I had the privilege of being a classmate of Mr. Barlow while taking classes at Paul D. Camp Community College in Smithfield. Mr. Barlow was an excellent example that you are never too old to learn. I want to convey my most sincere sympathies to his family.

Mr. Barlow was a great teacher. I was his student in several classes.(Class of '80). He taught us more than math, he taught us through relating his life experiences. He was an example to all of us that we should never stop learning regardless of our age. My deepest sympathies to his family.
