Ashley and Josh,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Your dad was a very special person and I still to this day have great memories of him. He used to always take us to get slurpees and to the hardware store on days that we had sleepovers. Back then I really felt like I was a part of your family. I just want you to know that even though I haven't seen him in over 20 years, he touched my life.

I was saddened to hear of Richard's death. He and I were great childhood friends when we both lived in Kingman Heights. One of my fond memories was when he went with me to visit my grandparents in North Carolina. Our last contact was at our tenth high school reunion of the class of 1966. I was reminded of a good friendship.

My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family. God bless you all.

Aunt Grace and family,
We are very saddened at the sudden loss of Richard. His smile, kindness and gentleness to everyone will never be forgotten. We are very appreciative for our family reunions that enabled us to keep in touch with our cousins. May the memories that mean the most to you and your family live forever in your hearts. We love you and want you to know we are near if you need us. Tommy is so sorry he cannot be with you during this time, but he is in Norfolk General Hospital and has been for the last 5 weeks. Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with you and the rest of the family.

I had the opportunity to work with Richard for many years. I was a young man during that time and learned a great deal from Richard, much more about life than hardware. I am sorry to hear about his passing but I know that I am not the only one that was enriched by knowing Richard. My family and I offer our sincere condolences and prayers to the entire Galbreath family. Our prayers will be for those that Richard loved the most and left behind to to find comfort in the Lord for we know in our heart of hearts that Richard is in a much better place.

Kim,
What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. You may not understand why your love one left this earth so soon, or why he left before you were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that they died, but that they lived. And that their life gave us memories too beautiful to forget. I am truly sorry for you loss. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Richard "Gabbo" Galbreath #53 on the Wilson High School Football Program... #1 in our hearts. I had the good fortune and great favor to grow up in Portsmouth with Richard. He was always so easy going and friendly.. even as a young boy. That just got better with time. After leaving P-Town in 1967 I would always try to stop by the store to say Hi. Even when he was busy he'd take time to spend a few minutes catching up on who was where and who was not. I always told him he should run for Mayor. The classes of the '60's put out some incredible individuals... the vast majority of whom fled town like me. Richard was one of the few who stayed and kept his finger on the pulse of High St. I last saw him in Aug. '02 at the WWHS Class reunion at Roger Brown's. He hadn't changed a bit since high school. The rest of us looked 40+ years older but Gabbo still looked the same... that boyish friendly smile! We've lost a good one... a real good one. There's a BIG hole in a lot of hearts...

When I would stop by the hardware store Richard and I would always talk about rebuilding my 1971 Wheelhorse riding lawn mower (the mower that I told him made him rich by me buying all the parts from him to rebuild it with :)), and we'd also talk about our old cars that we both had, and we'd even do a little bench racing while I was there (talking about what the old cars would do when you stomped on the loud pedal, and comparing our stories, seeing who could our do the other :)). He would always let me win though, and he'd call me by my first name when I would walk in the store, like he was glade to see me (where else are we going find that today?). I'm sure going to miss this friend, his wealth of knowledge, his laughter, and the times we spent talking shop.

I'm going to miss stopping in "the Hardware Store" and talking with Richard. His passing will leave a void in the many lives he affected over the years. As a young man, working with him was a pleasure, and he was an invalueable resource of hardware knowledge. If there's a Lawn Mower shop in Heaven, I know Richard just took it over. I'm glad I knew him.

I am so saddened upon hearing of Gabbo's untimely death. He will always be remembered as a tru friend. He was in the National Gaurd with me. I retired and moved to Michigan. I always made sure that I visited him while in town at the store. I will miss him Greatly.

I've known Richard for almost 60 years. He was a good man, always smiling and willing to go out his way to help anybody. He will be missed by thousands.

All who knew Richard will miss him...his friendly smile and manner made everyone comfortable, his generosity with his time and talent seemed never to end...he would always stop what he was doing to come to the aid of another. Richard will rest in peace.
