Robert Sher Obituary

Robert Sher PORTSMOUTH - Robert "Bobby" Sher, 69, died March 5, 2009, in Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Maryland after a brief illness. Bobby was born in Portsmouth, to the late Sadye and Louis Sher. Survivors include children, SueEllen Kelly (Jim) of Rockville, Md., Brian Sher of Trinidad, Calif., and Scott Sher (fiancée Lauren Kessler) of Long Island, N.Y.; his former wife, Eileen Sher; his brother Norman Sher (Sandra) of Portsmouth; and nieces, Jacky Sher Raker (Pat) of Alexandria, Va., and Lynn Sher Cohen (Hugh) of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Alex, Rebecca, Joe and Matt Kelly and Dylan Sher. Bobby graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School where he was an outstanding athlete in football and track. He went to the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship and graduated from the University of Miami where he ran track. He also graduated from University of Virginia Law School and practiced law in both Virginia and Maryland. His greatest pleasure in life was being with his family and watching his grandchildren excel in sports. A funeral will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. in Washington Hebrew Congregation in Washington, D.C. Shiva will be observed at the home of Norman Sher in Portsmouth on Thursday, March 12, at 6 p.m. Contributions in Bobby's memory may be made to Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, www.bgcgw.org.

My sympathy to all of you. I was in the WWHS class of 58 and spoke with Bobby at our 50th reunion. I can still see him running down the football field. He was one of the greatest. My thoughts are with you.
